If you want to use those dishes, go right ahead! I've fed my furkids off of the same dishes we eat from before.

Cats can have allergies to things like plastic, etc. I have always fed my cats from stainless steel bowls and they tolerated that well.

I use ceramic or stainless steel bowls, no plastic.

We do use human-intended ceramics--Meijer sells these sushi trays that are great for spreading out wet food or ground raw on.  They all have room to mosey up to the buffer.

I don't use plastic either (the Corelle dishes in the link the OP posted aren't plastic). I use ceramic. All 3 of my kitties have the same dish. It's so cute I had to get 3 of them

Cat's aren't picky about what their food is served in
You don't need to buy pet specific bowls unless you want the cute design, shape, etc. They're usually pricier than a cheap ceramic or glass bowl you can get at a big box or dollar store anyways. Just avoid plastic since that can cause allergies in some cats and also harbor bacteria.

Very true. My cats are picky about food. The cute cat face dishes were my idea.

@Bluecapps  - I got the cat face dishes from Amazon. I think they still have the white ones with blue eyes too. Free 2 day shipping if you are a Prime member

Definitely ceramic, glass, or stainless steal. Plastic can not only hold bacteria, it is in many cases the cause of chin acne in cats. My cat used to get it from a plastic bowl. I changed to ceramic, & it improved drastically.  After that, I learned I also had to loose the place mat. It made a big difference. Now, he only will get one on his chin randomly.

I don't like plastic because it can harbor bacteria and trigger allergies.  I really like the Corelle dishes the OP linked to.  About $3, perfect size, high enough edges to hold soupy cat food and shallow enough that they don't bother long-haired and long-whiskered cats.  Good choice!

Those cat face bowls are adorable!
I have always used unmatched ceramic or glass dishes that I usually pick up at second-hand shops for ten cents or a quarter. Occasionally dollar stores. The variety of shapes, colors, and designs is kind of fun at feeding time. But never plastic--the surface develops tiny scratches within which bacteria can grow.

Not necessary to have pet-specific bowls.  The only thing those typically do for you is a) comes in stainless steel so it doesn't break easily, although Corelle is very durable already and b) comes in shapes/sizes that human dishes don't come in.

I agree with the recs to not use plastic.  It just doesn't hold up well anyway.

One of the types of dishes we use for our cats is this square dip bowl from Target:  http://www.target.com/p/threshold-s...7667#prodSlot=medium_4_14&term=threshold+bowl  It's a good size for their twice-daily feeding amounts.

The other bowls we use are the low-rim Durapet stainless bowls.  These can be good for some cats as some will be picky about having their whiskers brush the sides of a deeper bowl.  But with some types of foods and some cats you could just as easily use a regular dessert plate or similar to alleviate that problem.  I tend to use the little white bowls for canned food and these stainless ones for mixing the freeze-dried food.

I also highly recommend choosing something you are able to buy enough of to clean after each feeding, and to do that!  We have about 10 of the Durapet bowls and 8 of those Target bowls, and 2 cats.  I throw the bowls in the dishwasher after every feeding and even if it takes 2-3 days before the dishwasher is run (there are only two humans in the house) there are always more than enough bowls.  If you are hand washing, you probably only need 2 or 3 sets to be enough.

Oh snap! Thank you for letting me know about the plastic containers!

I now use a ceramic plate, a round tuppperware dish (plastic
) and a square tuppperware dish (also plastic
).

As soon as I get out from work I'm going to find new dishes for the 3 kitties (momma and 4 kids) that I was able to keep

I bought a set of

Corellewear at a flea market for 5 bucks. It had the small plates and small bowls. That's what I use. My cats got cat acne from plastic bowls. Also, the plastic breaks down.

I don't use the plates for myself. Those are cat dishes only. I do put them in the dishwasher though.

I have Corelle bowls that OP mentions and I love them, but I use them for people food only. They are a bit too deep for my cat. I wish Corelle made shallower ones in the same size.

For my cat, I use these that the member jcat mentioned in the older thread, on a fast food tray (my cat sometimes drags a piece of meat out of the dish):

I put them in the dishwasher. No problem so far.
