I have 2 male cats (Milo & Finn), they are both almost a year old. Both fixed, up to date on shots , indoor only & microchipped. About a week ago Finn had some loose stools for about 2 days, they went away and then he started licking his butt A LOT, well that lasted about 3 days, then yesterday he started licking again & his loose stools started back up, today Milo also now has loose stools but no licking. I have called my vet and she said since both are eating & drinking normally, have no vomitting and acting and playing normally that she will not be able to see them until Friday. I have been putting small amounts of vaseline on Finn's bottom to try and help ease the redness and it is working a bit. My question is, while I am waiting to see the vet, what would cause this? Could it be their food all the sudden? I feed them each 2 cans of fancy feast, one in the morning and one in the evening, then they have dry food through out the day which they have never really cared for. Should I stop the wet can food? I am worried they wont eat since dry food isnt their favorite stuff. I am very worried about them and am trying to do what ever I can to make them more comfortable, is there any thing I can do to help their stool become more solid?

It sounds like worms. Bring a stool sample from each cat with you on Friday. Worms can cause diarrhea and that can cause soreness, which is why they are licking.

Do they go outside at all?

I would continue to feed them normally. They need to stay hydrated in the meantime from any diarrhea. Canned pumpkin mixed into their wet food, or boiled chicken and cooked rice are also good for diarrhea.

Let us know how it goes.

No they have never been outside in their life, well with the exception of the car trips from the SPCA when I adopted them at 8 weeks old & their trips to the Vets.

I will try your suggestions. Thank you!

Yes they have been. I orginally thought the loose stools were because Finn had gotten into my cereal while I was on the phone and dranl almost all the milk, but like I said that was a week ago, and now Milo has it. I do give them cat treats, but I have never noticed the loose stools before. It sure does'nt seem to bother them, but it does me.

Milk might cause diarrhea, but not a week later. Just because they have been wormed doesn't mean they don't have worms, though frequently being outside would make that more likely.

Could be an intestinal bug that will pass. Could have been a bad batch of food.

The canned pumpkin will work fastest.

Thanks, Im hoping that it is just something simple and nothing serious. I had a cat with serious health issues that i spent well over $5,000 on thoughout his life he was 9 years old when he passed away last year, he had 3 major stomach surgies and I had to feed him through a tube for 2 months, now I am just paranoid that something bad is going on. *sigh*

I understand where you are coming from completely!

Let's hope it's just a parasite or tummy flu!

Let us know what you find out though!

And, by the way, do you have houseplants they could have eaten? Or licked the bottom of a pair of shoes?

House plants no, but Milo eats EVERYTHING. He was diagnosed by the vet with PICA, he will eat paper, toilet paper, hair bands, shoes, plastic anything he can get in his mouth, I have to literally hide everything  from him and watch him constantly (thank goodness i dont work) he has actually went as far as chewing hair bands out of my hair while I slept. However today is the first day he has had loos stools. Could temptations cat treats cause loose stools?

I don't think so. I use them and never had a problem.

Don't forget the stool sample.

Let's see what the vet says.

The vet had a cancellation this morning and I was able to get them both in. She said there were no worms, and his bum was sore from the loose stools and him trying to lick it and soothe it, she said it was probably from treats or the milk that they have been eating, and gave them both probiotics and gi food for a week and Finn some soothing wipes for his bum. She everything looks great and of course to bring them back if something changes
