As far as I know nothing has ever happened here that made the national news. That is why I live here. :lol3: I did read somewhere in the local history that there was one hanging years ago on the courthouse square and people came to watch. I don't remember what it was all about or even if I ever knew.

well, years ago i lived in los angeles during the (rodney king) riots. that was in 1992. that's an experience i'll never forget. i remember at work we could see a nearby shopping mall on fire, the smoke rising from it. that's when our manager told everyone to go home and stay home, that we were closing the business for the day. after that the riots escalated, and the california army national guard and 1st marine division were called in and took control of the city. for those who don't know -- LA is an urban agglomeration, a main/central city with quite a few separate cities surrounding it/that are part it. so the riots spread out into other cities within the city of LA. once the national guard and marines arrived, everyone was required to stay indoors. this went on for at least several more days. at night, there were police helicopters with spot lights surveiling pretty much everywhere, including residential areas. so i'd be woken several times each night with either the sound of a helicopter very close by/overhead or a helicopter's spot light shining through my windows/curtains -- or both.

as to how that experience has influenced my life, i'd have to say that that's one of the reasons i've chosen to live in a rural area. i've lived in other cities too. but it's generally much more peaceful and much less chance of mass hysteria or rioting in a rural area. that's not to say we don't get occasional situations requiring police out here. mostly it's the police checking that someone's house hasn't been broken into -- while they're away, and a neighbor reported something looking suspicious; or a car being stopped for speeding or a drunk driver or such.

In 2004 we had 2 major hurricanes back to back. Frances (cat 4) 9/5. It seemed like we JUST got our power back on when Jeanne came by (cat 3) 9/26. That was no fun. Many homes in my area were destroyed. We were lucky and only sustained minor damage. Our neighborhood look like a bomb went off.

I'll still take that (without any destruction and damage of course)over snow.

Have I mentioned lately how much I truly despise snow and the cold?

We're in central PA and lived in a mobile home park when Hurricane Agnes came through in 1972. When we finally got back to our trailer (took about a week for the water to recede to the point where we could get back into the park), the water level had been up to right around my nose. We lost pretty much everything, saved a few things here and there, but not much. Fortunately, we were one of the few people there who had flood insurance. Took a while to get our payment. We lived with Rick's parents for the rest of that summer and then, in Sept, we moved into a HUD trailer and lived there for about a year before we built our first house. Way up on a hill, actually not quite a mile from where we're living now.

It was traumatic for us because we had only been married a little over a year and our son wasn't even a year old yet. I will never forget walking back into that trailer and seeing all the mud and canal water. But we were lucky. We had used our trailer ties, so the trailer shifted, but didn't tip. Other people who didn't use their ties lost everything when their trailers tipped over and went down the river and the canal.

That's pretty much the only thing I remember right off-hand. We had other hurricanes and even tornadoes in the area, but we've been lucky since then.

Winchester Winchester Oh my, that is horrible. We have hurricanes from time to time and I have seen what the flood water can do. It is terrible to ride down the streets and see peoples belongings by the sides of the road.
