I noticed a pretty bad wound on my cat's neck. My father keeps telling me he'll heal up on his own, but it's only gotten worse,

I noticed his cheek swelling today

This is a side view of his jaw. He hasn't been able to eat try food and his neck smells terrible

I got to lift his chin and saw these wounds. I treated it with peroxide and cleaned up the sticky residue under your neck, but it came back in the morning. Any assistance is appreciated!

Does your cat live outside. I am asking to rule out the possibility of being bitten by another animal.

He is an indoor and outdoor cat, though he hasn't been out much recently to my knowledge.

I am looking at the picture of your cat's face. The right jaw looks swollen and that is where the wound is. How long has this been on your cat.

Your cat needs needs to see a vet for antibiotics, particularly if he is not eating. It looks like he was bitten or got tangled up in a fence perhaps. But it sounds like it is infected and will not go away without treatment. Your cat probably also has fever if he is not eating, and likely is feeling pain. The wound looks nasty. Please tell your father he needs a vet call asap. The antibiotics will clear it quickly, but you don't want the infection to spread through his bloodstream.

Let us know how it goes!

mixli mixli Your cat needs to see the vet. Because of the swelling, I am thinking it is infected and this will not go away on its own. If your cat has been bitten by another cat or animal, the area will get worse. Tell your father or show him the answers you have received and ask to have your cat seen by a doctor.

He's been able to eat wet food, but I think the wound is making it difficult to bite down on the dry food. I'll see if I'm able to convince him now to bring him to the vet.

Another thing you can do is hold your cat. While you are doing it, try to feel around on the cat's body to see if you can feel any other scabbed places. A common place for a bite from another cat is at the base of the tail. Be sure to check that. If you see any other wounds, it is almost a sure thing your cat has tangled with another animal, possibly a cat, dog, coon, etc.

The sooner he could see a vet, the better.

Please keep us posted how the cat is doing. Sending lots of wishes for a good vet visit, some medicine and a quick recovery time.

How is your kitty's neck today? Have you been able to get to the vet yet?

I managed to get him in yesterday! The vet said he had a nasty infection and gave him some antibiotics and a medicine for us to give him every twelve hours. He's already being much more lively and the swelling is completely gone! Thank you both for helping my convince my father that Grizz needed to go in.

You are very welcome! :)

So glad that your dad let you take him and that he is already on the mend. It is always a relief to hear a positive outcome.

Oh, when did he lose his teeth? You can moisten dry food with water or broth and he can still eat it that way! :)

He had one missing tooth when we adopted him from the pound, but he lost another one recently.
