Hello fellow cat enthusiasts! I am a first time cat owner and would like your advice cornering the health of a lovely cat that came into my life yesterday.

So I adopted a 7-8+ year old beautiful cat from the SPCA this past Saturday. She's believed to be a mix of sorts (profile picture) and she did have a past owner because she was fixed and declawed b4 becoming a stray.

What is troubling is after further observation at home I suspect she may be actively sick.

Bad Symptoms

1. Skinny. At the shelter I noticed right off the bat how skinny she was; her ribs are easily felt, her spinal bone jets out, her hip bones are visible, etc. One of the workers admitted she was underweight. It may have been due to diarrhea they said and stress of the shelter. They think the cat has an allergy to red dye. I have been feeding it the past two days a higher quality brand (wellness). Her stools have been formed and she's peeing it seems w/o difficulty.

2. Sneezing. She kept sneezing and sneezing. Today the sneezing has subsided a bit, but she still sneezes! I notice she sneezes a lot when she's eating. At the SPCA one worker told me something like she had a URI and it will fully pass in 60 days(?). While another worker told me she never had a URI. And then another worker told me it may be allergies????.... I would also like to note she sounds a bit congested.

3.Eyes where watering today. No colored discharge.

4. Her fur is sadly a mess. It is very rough and smells unfortunately like urine. I don't want to bother her if she's sick. I also want her to feel more comfortable. Therefore I intend on grooming her in a few days.  I did get a good shredder and a waterless cat shampoo spray that I intend to spray either on a paper towel or her soft  brush.. I know some cats don't groom themselves, but I think this is pretty bad.

Unsure symptoms and behaviors

1. Seems tired. She sleeps a lot. On the 45 minute ride home she just sat in my arms. She doesn't jump up at all at home. She lays on her bed and on the floor. Maybe her past owner forbid her to jump up? She may actually have bad eye sight...She's a very zen cat; doesn't really move around much.  I sadly don't know if this normal for her.

2. Head feels warm. I was reading online that cats get fevers. She feels warm to me; it's hard however since I have nothing to compare it too. I have cranked the AC up (just in-case) because I know keeping the environment cool can help with a fever.

3.  Weak meow. I know some cats, for whatever reason, have a weak meow. But sadly I don't know if it's normal for her. She very quiet for the most part.

Good

1. She's eating a decent amount of food. I'm feeding her wellness. Today I introduced a teaspoon of wet food. I also see her drink water.

2. She's smart. She knows where the cat littler is and uses it w/o difficulty.

3. She passes formed stools and pees seemingly w/o difficulty.

4. Her hearing seems to be very good and her eyes dilate normally it seems. She displays normal reactions to loud sounds (my juicer).

Her records

According to what the SPCA she was last seen by someone 6/16/2015. She was negative for FeLV test and FIV. They did two fecal checks and treated her for fleas. She also was given a booster. Unfortunately her  weight was not recorded on the information they gave me. Also nothing about a URI.

My plan.

I intend to continue to observe her the next few days and locate a reasonable vet. I do want to have the vet do a physical anyway, but incase the bad symptoms increase what should I ask the vet to check for specifically? What do you expect (if anything) from my explanation.

Nonetheless I love her and I'm glad I made my decision. I hope I'm just being ultra paranoid. If she is sick I will try my best to heal her and if she is actively dying I will try to make her comfortable. I'm sad that money right now isn't exactly flowing, but I'm hopful I will be able to afford medincine for her if she needs it. Please help if you can offer some advice I would appreciate it....Please, if you are spiritual, pray for her. Please pray for Nana.

Thank you,

L.

Hello! It's completely normal to feel this way being a first-time owner, especially with a cat with conditions like these.  It's really great though that her stool is forming and that she's being fed quality food. I also feed my kitten Wellness and it's done her wonders. By the sounds of it though, it sounds like your new baby has an upper respiratory infection. My best piece of advice is to take her to a vet and get her checked out. Does she drink water with ease, and is her appetite growing?

I would also say she probably has a URI. Our kitten had the same symptoms before she was diagnosed with one. If this is what your cat has, she'll need to go to  vet to get antibiotics. The eye discharge and sneezing make it sound like this. Excessive sleeping can also be something that is caused by this. URIs are extremely common, especially among stray cats and ones from shelters, and extremely treatable.

Wow! That was so fast! Thank you for your swift replies. I appreciate your advices. I'm hopeful it is that. I'm a believer in nipping things in the bud so I'll take her to the vet either tomorrow or Tuesday.

And yes her appetite seems to be growing. I am very thankful for that. I am noticing that she has problems when drinking or eating. That's when she sneezes the most. =

Also yes her appetite is growing. And yes I do notice when she's eating or drinking she sneezes directly after.

That's so good her appetite is coming back! The sneezing after drinking might be only because water goes up her nose. It happens to my cat. But, by the likes of it, it's probably something more serious since she's so fatigued.

Ooh, I also forgot a helpful tip: previously I used vitamins for my kitten, but she was getting too many nutrients, so we took her off them. However, vitamins do wonders for sick cats! We used Doc Roy's powdered vitamins and mixed it with wet food. It's great for when cats are sick, lactating, pregnant, and recovering from surgery.

Thank you! I never thought about vitamins. That is so neat! I will surely try to find some for her @ the store.
Oh yes it's probably part of it. I'm not sure if you can tell from my picture, but her face is sort of flat looking(?) I guess you can say. Her most striking feature is her paws and arms! Her paws her so little when compared to other cats and her front arms seem to be quite short compared to her back legs. Perhaps it's a feature from a breed of cat, but nonetheless she is very very cute....Thank for all your help again!! We both really appreciate it! Hope to deliver good news in a few days.

@crimmie
Thank you so much for your support! I appreciate your kind words so much. Helping a cat like Nana brings me much fulfillment. I really support adopting from shelters and homeless cats. Will keep updating on Nans's condition =)

NANA UPDATE*

Good News

1. No colored discharge from eyes or nose. Eyes have seem to stop watering.

2. Stools are still formed and the cat is using the little box w/o difficultly.

3. I have included a high calorie nutrient paste to her feedings.

4. I made an appointment with a recommend vet. The earliest appointment I could get was for Friday...I may call today to see if anyone canceled depending on how Nana is doing.

Okay News

1. Nana is not meowing at the moment. When she tries I see her mouth curl as she opens her mouth, but it's as if her meows are on mute. When I adopted her on Saturday her meows were very weak and often in-audible. But now I hear zero meows.

2. Her sneezing has subsided, but she sounds way more congested. Is this the correct progression of a cat cold (particular URI)? Sneezing ---> Congested. She sounds as if she has a bad stuffed nose. I can hear it when she's sleeping too; it sounds like she is snoring. I can especially hear it when she purrs. This is the most bothersome symptom because I can tell it's effecting her energy level and appetite. It's also hard to differentiate it from respiratory distress Vs. Stuffed nose. I don't hear her wheezing and her respirations/per min aren't increasing so I think it is just a stuffed nose for now.

My goal for her today is to encourage her to eat (right now she's resting) and to monitor her for any respiratory distress. Please any advice is welcomed!

That sounds like how it went for us after the kitten was on medication. However, watch out for coughing and wheezing. This can indicate that the URI has progressed to something more serious, heading toward pneumonia.

That does sound like a URI, so it's good you have an appointment for her. :cross: it goes well.

The soft meow might disappear once she's settled in. Mogli squeaked when we first got him (at 9 months), and many of his meows were silent. Nowadays we miss the peace we had back then! It could also be that she's just a quiet cat. It's like with people - some are loud, some aren't.

@NewYork1303

Thank you for your reply!  I will be on the look out for those symptoms. She thankfully isn't coughing or wheezing.

@jcat

Mogji is such a cute name! And thank you I'm praying it goes well too... I think you are correct; she may just be a quiet cat overall. She's a very gentle sweet little cat. I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to take care of her

Thanks everyone
!

**NANA UPDATE**

A possible reason why her condition seems to be worsening is possibly due to the AC. The past two days I have had the AC on @ night and she may have caught a draft

Nonetheless she hasn't eaten anything today; not even her treats. I see her try to eat, but when she tries she sneezes excessively. I did put a little bit of high calorie nutrition cat paste on her lips.

Her respirations have actually increased by 10 per minute. Yesterday @ rest she averaged around 20 now she is around 30 per minute.  30 per minute is considered to be a high normal when it comes to cats, but I'd think hers would be lower since she is so small.... It's probably a bit high due to her congestion.

I also tried listened to her heart and get a pulse, but I couldn't differentiate it between her purring. I will watch how the vet does it which will be...TOMORROW instead of Friday! That's my good news! I called the vet office and I was able to get an earlier time; tomorrow @ 5. Hoping & praying she will feel better!

Thank goodness you were able to get a sooner vet appointment! It definitely sounds like she is getting worse if she isn't eating. What kind of food does she eat (flavor)? When cats are congested they often can't smell their food. They won't eat what they cannot smell. It is a good idea to try feeding strong fishy smelling foods, fishy canned foods, tuna, or even cat food of a different flavor sprinkled with goldfish food. Getting her to eat is very important!

**NANA UPDATE**

So Nana is doing better today. She has more of a appetite, drinking water, and has a bit more energy it seems.

Took her to the vet and it looks like she has a URI. The vet suspects it is caused by the Herpes virus. We were given liquid antibiotics  and were advise to reduce Nana's stress and ensure adequate nutrition. Nana only weighed 5.6lbs!

Hopefully she feels better soon! I pray the virus goes dormant & that the stress of the SPCA was what brought it out. We will be becoming back to the vet to get her Rabies vaccine once she feels a bit stronger.

Nonetheless I will update her progress in the next few days!

God Bless you all and thank you for your support!

Poor baby. It's so great though that her appetite is well and growing. Surely she'll get better in no time. If she has troubles with stress you could always get Feliway or some knock off of it. It helps with stress, it's what I got my kitten when we first got her. I wish the best for Nana

I'm glad you got to see the vet. I hope Nana feels better soon! My cat has feline herpes and it has been dormant. I have never seen him have any kind of a break out.
