First I noticed after one weekend that there was a brown dead cat (not mine) in ditch next to my house, poor thing was stiff like wood, so probably car had hit the cat during night's beer run, as between Saturday and Sunday there is lot of traffic during night when it is that time of month when majority go to city to drink their lights out, which I consider bit stupid, but so they do.

Now earlier today I noticed other side of road there was dark brown cat that had gloves next to him. Worrying thing is that my Panther is black cat that has been many days missing, I could not tell if that dead one would be Panther, but black paws, short hair, however that dead cat looked to be bigger and browner, maybe because of death.

So two dead cats in not more than two weeks, not in 8 years there has been single one.

Both I found after the weekend.

I don't know, but I'm getting impression that someone is intentionally trying to hit cats, it is happening too often now to be coincidence, imo.

I hope that Panther appears, but I don't really believe, other cats are very nervous and stressed and somehow I think even that one is much fatter and browner, he might of been Panther.

Oh, no....[emoji]128546[/emoji][emoji]128546[/emoji] JTbo, I hope not.

I'm taking it that its unusual to find cats dead in this area?

Saying a prayer for Panther, either way. And one for you. Can you build a catio and try to keep them from the road?

Not single one in 8 years, area is more like a forest without housing, but one road goes trough area, that road is very quiet except for this month as holiday season is now and that multiplies amount of traffic.

I have dreamed about catio, but cost is way too high for me, at least 500 and probably even more, for me getting bills paid is quite much as I'm unable to work because of health issues.

That's so sad. I'm sorry to hear that.

We go through periods of seeing a lot of cats killed on the roads in this area too. It's usually so quite here, but if there is a holiday or a special event lots of city folk drive up from Tokyo and then we notice animals killed on the road. Local people drive more carefully. There are a lot of deer and boar around and it would do serious damage to your car if you hit one.

I always have to stop and bury the cats or raccoons I see, I can't bear to leave them there.

I'll pray that your lost one is safe and will come back to you, and cry for the beautiful life that was lost to the road. I've witnessed drivers swerving to hit a cat, I've buried several that were lost to our road. My heart goes out to you, please know I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. You are a kind heart and deserve to be blessed for your caring and devotion. Take care.......

Thank you from your comments.

I believe it is quite certain that it was Panther that died there, poor thing was only 10 meters from safety of home.

Panther was the glue that kept gang together, now that he is gone they are quite lost, I'm not allowing them to go outdoors for now, too risky. Panther was also only cat I know that climbed up to full grown pine tree and happily came down by his own, he also liked to hunt snakes, adder species, he was very quick to react, so it is bit weird how he could get hit by a car.

Each one is acting own way weird, two are extremely affectionate and one is very vocal, while two are keeping distance and just restless. I try to activate them to play and to do more with them, maybe that will get them unstressed a bit.

Here it is city folk also, they have vacation and have a cabin or something, drive way too fast and ignorant about what is normal here.

I got almost hit today when I ride my scooter to city to pick up supplies for cats, one car overtook me so close that my scooter veered off from line I was riding, local people are lot more cautious. Road to city does not have shoulders at all, just ditch right after white line at edge of road and road is very narrow.

There were two squirrels and several birds as well as few other creatures I could not tell what they were on road to city, all hit by a car, also people seem to be driving a lot faster this season than before.

Today police were checking speeds and they did write lot of fines, so I guess that that is some change, police usually does not bother with this area at all.

Still hoping this was not Panther you saw as seemed larger.  Your other cats must sense something though.  Perhaps the unusual amount of activity and traffic racing past.   I hope it does not last long and the police get the traffic in check before any more harm is done.

Poor Panther, I really hope it wasn't him.

You can buy metal cat shaped signs that have reflective eyes to stick into the ground at the side of the road. We used to have a couple nailed to fence posts near our old house. The eyes light up when headlights hit them and the glowing eyes catch drivers attention and make them slow down momentarily. I'm sure you could make something similar to put next to the road near your property.

I think the majority of drivers are careless, rather than deliberately trying to hit animals. Something like this might make them more cautious.

How sad. :cross: that the second one wasn't Panther. This time of year a lot of cats seemed to get hit by cars, probably because they're out and about more than in the winter.

Now I hear that black and white cat was seen dead in not too far away from here and it was runaway Mauku as I checked, why cats die like a flies now?

So there are 3 cats died in a month, while it used to be that none died for many years.

That is so sad.  I hope this new trend will stop with the close of summer vacation traffic and things slow down to a normal pace.

There is road construction work, speeds are alredy a lot less than used to be, this is so weird.

I tried to catch Mauku some time ago, but failed, if she would of just understood how much better she would of been indoors!

Rest of the gang is not going to get outdoors until I get some kind of closure for them, that is for certain, even they scream to be let out every day, but there are other cats, some feral some with homes but running free and are at risk.

I'm so sorry JTbo.

Your cats are all so beautiful, but I think like most people who take care of semi-feral cats you have realised that it's impossible to protect them from all the dangers in the world. Who knows why some of them decide to take off and leave the safety of their home territory? I've had cats disappear the same way. It's heartbreaking but that's what comes with taking care of these wild ones.

Is it possible to put a cat proof fence around your property? I hope you find some way to keep the rest of the family safe.

Thank you for caring for them, you really are a nice person.

Cost of fence is only issue really, enclosure would be bit cheaper, but still at the moment bit too much of cost.

I try to make some sort of enclosure though, but when I will have money for it, is unknown, also I want to plan it so that cats can visit there when they want, have access to forest part so they can do exploring and have that safety too.

How odd that this happens despite the road construction work and lower speeds.

May it stop now and no further cats come to harm.  I hope you are able to form some kind of enclosed area that the cats will like and choose to stay safe with you.  These things are expensive even when small but you seem very resourceful and perhaps will come up with some way to do this.  It is a shame that you have to though.
