Hi there, I'm new here and am hoping someone can give me some advice or stories of IL. Our rescue Kitty Lulu unfortunately was let out by our children before we could get her to the vet and have her spayed, so here we are 9 weeks later with a beautiful first time mama cat and her 4 babies. She had 3 within 4 hours then stopped for about 6 hours, and had her fourth. It's now been 48 hours and I can feel another kitten in there. She is quite content and is eating, using the litter box, and acting very calm. She's nursing her first four like a champ and is such a wonderful mother already but I'm not sure how long I should let her body do it's thing before I become worried. The fact that she's so calm makes me think she's ok and I read that it could be 3 days of interupted labor before the other kitten/s are born. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance! -Krysta

Are you sure there is another kitten?  Do you feel movement?  It could be her uterus you are feeling.  It takes time for the uterus to shrink back down..Either way if she isn't showing signs of distress, everything is fine.

Beautiful cat family!

Thank you! And yes I am 99% positive it is another kitten. It feels just like all the rest (a head sized hard lump going back to a spine) and isn't always in the same place. It seems to float around in there and I'm praying I felt movement although it's hard to tell if it's Lu being squirmy a tad or the kitten moving away. It's obviously got lots of room in there now. Haha. But when you gently push it gives a little and like I said moves away instead of springing back into place and I think it's too hard to be the uterus? I've had two children of my own and don't remember feeling anything like that with mine? (Tmi? Sorry ;) )

It could be hours or a day or two.  She will go into labor again.  Just keep an eye on her.

Ok, I will do my best! Thank you! Any idea if this is due to a different father, could it be this kitten is a tad "undercooked" ? Haha, also any idea how long I have to wait after pregnancy to have her spayed? As beautiful as she is we definitely don't need more kittens in this world :)

You need to wait until the kittens are 8 weeks old..   She can go into heat within a week of giving birth and can conceive while nursing.  How long was she out?  It could be she was impregnated twice by 2 different males a couple days apart.

My kids (3&6) let her out and she was gone for 3 days, we were worried sick. So then this last kitten could actually be arriving right on time? That's fascinating!

Yes, she may have mated with the same cat or a different cat over those three days. If she released an egg after her final mating session, it could even have been fertilized the day after she came home, so it could potentially be born up to a week later. Cats do not release an egg until they actully mate.

I'd leave her be. All should be well, but let us know when it happens!

Interesting, huh? ;)

Ok so still no number 5. She seems very mildly agitated like a 4 out of 10. She jumped on the counter for water and I saw two little streaks of fresh bright red blood near her rear. This was about 20 minutes ago, she has since cleaned herself and is now laying, puring, and nursing her kittens. I'm trying to get a hold of the vet now and waiting for a call back. Should I be slightly panicked? I don't remember seeing bright red blood, I remember more mucus plug goo with the first births and only red blood with the placenta delivery. I was able to feel the kitten in utero gently from both sides and it seems lined up in the canal. I'm praying this is about to turn into a final labor and healthy kitty but I'm slightly nervous something more serious is going on.

We are giving calming responses (I do too), but the situation is of course touchy.  So its necessary and good of you to keep a close observance, and know where you do have your vet.

It will probably be a natural delivery, but a emergency rush to the vet isnt outside the possibilites.

Good luck!

ps.  the whitish kitten is probably a point, you will see in a week or two for sure.

She will not lose another mucus plug and I don't think she will have another water sack.  The blood could have been normal afterbirth bleeding.  But as Stefanz said it's good to check with the vet via phone and keep watch.  If she isn't in distress I wouldn't worry too much.  BTW  Cats can pick up on our stress.

Thank you for your responses. Today was the last day of having to babysit extra kids so we have a mostly calm house again :lol3: sorry i didn't respond earlier. I ended up taking her to the vet, better safe then sorry. She did wonderfully, stayed as calm as she could and he did an ultrasound. He saw nothing, just the normal slightly enlarged uterus and what he referenced to as some "junk" in her uterus. He said not to worry and that I was probably feeling her kidneys??? He also said if it is another kitten, possibly still born that she would pass it in a few days and not to worry, unless her behavior changes and she starts acting sickly. So for now I'm just going to enjoy these adorable little four beauties and fill up my phone with fluffy pictures. Haha. I once read somewhere that long hair cats opened their eyes later (10-14) days, as opposed to short hair cats (5-7 days) any one know if there is any truth to that or any way to tell? Also what is a Point? The cream colored kitten dies have little gray ears :rbheart:;)

Also do you really think I'm feeling her kidneys? Are they as hard and round as a head? (I am not stressing I promise just really confused as to what I felt)

This poster is asking in the post above what a "point" is.

Yes, long-haired cats tend to open their eyes later than short-haired ones, but I do not know why. Genetics, I'm sure.

That's good you took her to the vet. If he saw no kitten then that's your answer. Discharge following birth is normal. A lot of bright red blood or smelly yellow or green discharge is not normal. Or if she stops eating and seems to have a fever and lethargy. She is probably just fine and was experiencing after pains. The kitten is precious! Enjoy! :)
