Hi,

I went to the vet as my cat was suffering from flu, diarrhea, tearing eyes, sneezing.

The vet gave her two injections, the one am worried about is Dexa. I've read about it and found that it is mainly an anti inflammation treatment. Soon after she got the injection she started vomiting.

The vet said she needs to get it twice again.

Is this normal or should I stop giving her the injections.

Thanks

Is it Dexamethasone?

It sounds as if your cat has several issues going on. An upper respiratory infection and something (parasite, IBD, ect) that is causing the diarrhea.

Is your vet certain your cat has Calicivirus and not feline herpes? Was a test done to get a true diagnosis?

While a steroid can *sometimes* be warranted, one MUST be extremely careful as steroids lower the immune system and can actually make feline herpes much worse.

Yes it is.

Unfortunately where I live pets are not taking seriously !! So he didn't do tests just checked ears, eyes and muzzle then asked about her food. I told him that I used to give her a bit of Whiskas as a treat but royal canin for food.

He advised me to stop giving her whiskas and gave the injections.

Now she is very tired and not interested in food she just drinks water.

L-lysine (a supplement) has been shown to help cats when they have herpetic flare-ups. 500 mg is often used daily (250 mg twice a day) and 1000 mg (500 mg twice a day) when a cat is having an active flare-up.

For kittens, 500 mg (250 mg twice daily) is often enough during a flare-up.

Famcyclovir is an anti-viral medication that can be used as well.

What is your vet doing to treat the diarrhea?

Ok that's helpful. Am not sure about the other injection I suppose that it's for the diarrhea. I've read more about DEXA and found that many others have used it for similar symptoms and that the side effects my cats experienceing are normal.

I'll keep giving it to her for the following two days, once a day as the vet recommended.

Thanks
