for today's Question of the Day, let's talk about......

TV Shows:  Of the Past, Present, and Future --

The Past --

What have been some of your favorite TV shows? Any that you didn't enjoy?

Any TV shows of the past that you wish were still running (making new episodes)?

Is there a genre (type) of TV show that you liked the most?  (like crime drama, sci-fi, comedy, home improvement, reality, etc)

The Present --

What are some of your favorite TV shows (that are still making new episodes)? Any that you really don't like?

How about remakes of older TV shows? Have you watched any? What did you think of them?

Have your preferences changed, as to what genre (type) of TV show you enjoy the most?

The Future --

Are there any TV shows (of the present) that you'd enjoy continuing to see (to make new episodes)?

How about new genre(s) (types) of TV shows that you'd like to see?

Any TV shows you would like to see -- based on a book, movie, comic book, anime, etc? or even based on a totally new, original idea?

i'll start!

there are a couple TV series/shows that i really enjoyed, and wish they had continued being aired on TV. i really liked NBC's Monday Night at the Movies, which ran up until 1999 on and off, and during that time the day of the week it aired changed quite a few times. i loved the NBC Mystery Movies that aired on sunday nights, and sometimes aired two different shows each week -- on sunday and wednesday nights. this was the show that rotated which series they aired weekly, between Columbo, McCloud, and McMillan & Wife. some other TV shows that i remember enjoying were the original Hawaii Five-O series, and Adam 12. i also very much enjoyed watching the Benny Hill Show, and Are You Being Served -- though by the time i was watching those they were reruns. oh, and Doctor Who which is probably one of the longest running TV series and which is stilling making new episodes to this today. i remember watching Doctor Who at 1 am, the middle of the night for a young teen.

i'd have to say the TV shows from the past that stick in my mind as ones i didn't like were the soap operas and talk shows. i saw enough of soap operas when i was home during the summer vacations, because my mom followed a few different ones. just about everything imaginable could and did happen in the soap operas. i just didn't like anything about talk shows.

i think that any of the old or really old TV shows i enjoyed, if they had continued making new episodes, would have changed over time to a point that the show more than likely wouldn't have remained a favorite of mine.

crime drama was one of my favorite genres, though i have eclectic tastes.

theses days my favorite shows are Bones, Building Wild, iZombie, and Orphan Black. i like Murdock Mysteries, NCIS, Person of Interest, Criminal Minds, Burn Notice, Covert Affairs, Suits, and White Collar too.

there are so many TV shows that i don't like these days. i don't like Dancing with the Stars, The Voice, or any of those type shows at all. i used to enjoy watching Hawthorne, but at a certain point it became very much like a soap opera and so i stopped watching it. i really liked Being Human too, but at a certain point they lost me -- where the ghost characters were eating people. nope, and just nope, don't need to see that.

i think the only remake of a TV series that i've seen is the remake of Hawaii Five-O. my mom and i were talking about it a while back. she said it wasn't as good as the original Hawaii Five-O and i agreed, but i also told mom that i didn't think they'd ever have been able to make it as good as the original. and compared to the current TV shows 'out there', the Hawaii Five-O remake is really a very good show.

i still enjoy crime dramas very much, but i also like fast-moving, lots of action and excitement TV shows.

i'd enjoy continuing to see new episodes of my current favorite TV shows. but there have also been some very good new TV shows relatively recently, and i hope that trend (of decent new TV series) continues.

i'd like to see more shows with a steampunk theme to them. there's one show that has that (new episodes are still being made) -- Murdock Mysteries. really a good show.

how about you?

My dad loved Westerns and country music, so we grew up on a mix of Bonanza, Hee Haw, reruns of The Rifleman, Rawhide, anything that had Johnny Cash or John Wayne... you get the picture.

I tend to watch murder mystery shows and movies--you know, the old fashioned ones that aren't too gory.  The PBS series Miss Marple and Agatha Christie's Marple, Murder She Wrote, things like that.  I liked Bones but then it got too gory for my taste.

I basically like TV that's what my friend calls 'mind candy'--they're mostly background noise that I can sort of watch while I'm doing something else but don't have to really pay too much attention to.

I'm a boring TV watcher.

I have always liked crime and law and order type series both in the past and the present.  I did also like the mindless sitcoms in the past like the Lucy shows.

I mostly watch channels like ID and Nat Geo Wild now.  I did catch up on the two episodes of Zoo that just started on CBS and it looks interesting.  I had seen it advertised and then forgot about it so I caught up with it on On Demand this afternoon.  I know it's a way out there premise but the idea of animals deciding that enough is enough and turning the tables on humans is a good one.

I hate the silly so called reality shows.  Not only do I find them really boring I dislike the fact that they are a cheap  easy way for the networks to make money.

Interesting discussion, mickNsnicks2mom!

TV Shows:  Of the Past, Present, and Future --

The Past --

What have been some of your favorite TV shows? Any that you didn't enjoy?

The original Star Trek and Star Trek TNG (I loved them both) Not so much Deep Space Nine and Voyager

I have never cared for any of the reality shows; I think they're ridiculously stupid.

I haven't watched Bones since they killed Sweets.

Any TV shows of the past that you wish were still running (making new episodes)?

Well, they are making some new X-Files episodes, so that does it for me! I was such a X-Files fan. When our son visited his GF in NY, they would watch it, then he would call me, just so we could chat about it. Especially the first time the Home episode was shown; that one totally creeped us out. I remember the phone rang, I picked it up, and heard, "Mom! That was just sick!'
To this day, when I hear "Wonderful Wonderful" by Johnny Mathis, my skin crawls. There was another episode, too, about the fluke worm. Disgusting. (I loved it.)

Is there a genre (type) of TV show that you liked the most?  (like crime drama, sci-fi, comedy, home improvement, reality, etc)

Sci-Fi ranks up there fairly high. And that has never changed. We do watch some home improvement shows on DIY.

The Present --

What are some of your favorite TV shows (that are still making new episodes)? Any that you really don't like?

I'm still watching Supernatural; this past season was actually pretty good. I'm a Sleepy Hollow fan, too. Outlander just rocks. And I love Big Bang.

How about remakes of older TV shows? Have you watched any? What did you think of them?

The only remake I watched for a while was Hawaii 5-O and that was strictly for when Alex O'Laughlin removed his shirt. (Why, yes, I'm shallow.)

Have your preferences changed, as to what genre (type) of TV show you enjoy the most?

I used to watch comedies from time to time, but I can't tell you when the last time was I watched anything like it. For the most part, the comedies on tv are not worth watching.

The Future --

Are there any TV shows (of the present) that you'd enjoy continuing to see (to make new episodes)?

I know that they're working on season 2 of Outlander. Sleepy Hollow starts back in the fall. I would have loved to have seen a second season of Moonlight.

How about new genre(s) (types) of TV shows that you'd like to see?

Nothing really comes to mind.

Any TV shows you would like to see -- based on a book, movie, comic book, anime, etc? or even based on a totally new, original idea?

You know, I don't watch enough tv to make any recommendations. Most often, when a book is made into a series, they screw it up so badly, it doesn't resemble anything from the original book.

What I can say is that I wish they'd do away with a lot of the so-called reality shows. Some of the most ridiculous programming on television today.

TV Shows:  Of the Past, Present, and Future --

The Past --

What have been some of your favorite TV shows? Any that you didn't enjoy?

Back in the day when I was a kid, I loved Little House on the Prairie, MASH, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Love Boat. I loved Benny Hill and Are You Being Served, too. Great stuff! Right now, I'm watching Frasier on Netflix

Adult years- The Sopranos, Sex and The City, Deadwood,

Didn't enjoy?  Most sports, not big on most sci-fi, kids shows

Any TV shows of the past that you wish were still running (making new episodes)? Not really

Is there a genre (type) of TV show that you liked the most?  (like crime drama, sci-fi, comedy, home improvement, reality, etc) Comedy

The Present --

What are some of your favorite TV shows (that are still making new episodes)? Any that you really don't like?

Lillyhammer on Netflix- I don't have cable so I am limited to what's available on Netflix but I don't miss pretty much all network shows. The same cheesy jokes and storylines over and over

How about remakes of older TV shows? Have you watched any? What did you think of them? Don't watch them

Have your preferences changed, as to what genre (type) of TV show you enjoy the most? Nope

The Future --

Are there any TV shows (of the present) that you'd enjoy continuing to see (to make new episodes)? Lillyhammer

How about new genre(s) (types) of TV shows that you'd like to see? More dark comedy

Any TV shows you would like to see -- based on a book, movie, comic book, anime, etc? or even based on a totally new, original idea? I don't watch a lot of TV either but I do agree that they need to stop with all the ridiculous reality shows.

You know, I think I should add that I enjoy watching METV. The channel carries many old shows. And by "old", I mean MASH (I just love MASH), Bob Newhart, Andy Griffith (I think Rick and I have seen every Andy Griffith show by now), and the like. Antenna TV shows Newhart (the Vermont inn). I'm a big Bob Newhart fan, so they are right up my alley. I used to watch Bewitched when I was a kid and it's on Antenna TV. On Saturdays, METV does a Western theme and on Sundays, it's a private investigator theme. My father would have loved all of those shows.

I also like the CREATE channel (it's a PBS channel). It carries Cook's Country and America's Test Kitchen, which are really good how-to shows. None of the contest drivel that's on Food Network these days. I like watching the old Martha Stewart shows and Martha Bakes. Lydia Bastianich. Julia Child. There's an interesting show on CREATE with Kevin Dundon, who cooks Irish recipes. He did an episode one night on nothing but chocolate....I gained ten pounds just watching him. I really enjoy the show and I'd like to get one of his cookbooks. Nick Stellino, too.

I always liked Night Court and Designing Women. Dixie Carter as Julia Sugarbaker was awesome.....well, I always thought so.

Oh, and my guilty pleasure of the moment is Mysteries at the Museum. It's on the TRAVEL channel and it's really quite interesting.

MASH is available to stream on Netflix. The whole series
I haven't had cable since 8/2013. I shut it off when DD went to school. No sense in paying for it just for me and she really doesn't watch TV. Travel Channel was one of my very favorites. I loved No Reservations and Bizarre Foods. They have great specials, too.

john wayne is one of my favorite actors. i could watch john wayne movies every day. several years ago (or longer) one tv station played 'Christmas with the Duke' -- i was i heaven, watched all day and well into the night. i loved his westerns and war movies, but also other types of movies he was in -- like The Quiet Man, and The Long Voyage Home.

i like the shows based on agatha christie's books/characters, and also enjoy watching Murder She Wrote.

We need to get Netflix....we've been talking about it now for a while.
Netflix is worth the money just for their original series. Everything else is a bonus

I also have streaming through Amazon Prime but I don't use it as much as Netflix.

I Love Lucy was one of my all time favorite shows. i've probably seen every episode made, more than once. there are certain episodes that are 'classics', like the one where lucy and ethel dressed up as martians, vita-meata-vegamin, the friends of the friendless, the candy factory, and many others.

if i'm not mistaken, everyone replying has stated their dislike of reality shows -- including myself.

Does nobody watch the mentalist and the closer?
i do! great shows too. i never did watch all the episodes, through all 7 seasons of the Mentalist -- thedarehub dot com has all episodes of all 7 seasons available to watch.

The Closer, with kyra sedgewick! really great tv show! though i was sad that the series ended, that last episode was perfect. what brenda did in that last episode was right 'in character', the perfect ending to the series really.

thank you, @Winchester!

Star Trek, another truly great tv show! i never got into anything but the original Star Trek, though i did like kate mulgrew as the captain in Voyager.

i'll tell ya, i was shocked when they killed off sweets. i'm wondering where and how much things will change this next season, since bones and booth left the jeffersonian/FBI and are moving/new jobs.

The X-Files was a really good show! do you know, is david duchovny going to be in the new episodes? have you watched the new tv show that he's in -- Aquarius, on NBC? i think that's a good show, good story line.

yup, i enjoy Sleepy Hollow as well as Supernatural, though i'm not caught up with either series through the most recent episode.

hmmm......Moonlight......i think i've seen that show, and liked it.

I liked TNG. Never could like the original series (because of Shatner- I love George Takei) although DH loved it and DD does now as well.

David Duchovny is going to be in the new episodes of X Files. That was a good show. I'm curious to see how it holds up now. They both look fantastic though.

I agree about Kate Mulgrew as the captain in Voyager; she was good in that role. And I rather liked Quark in DS 9. (I have a neat t-shirt that says "Quark's Bar and Grill" on the front.)

Yes, Duchovny, Anderson, and Pileggi are all coming back in their original roles in the X-Files. I am so psyched about the X-Files! I've tried to watch Aquarius, but keep falling asleep.
I don't know if that says anything about the show or just that I'm pooped. I want to watch Hannibal, too, because I like Gillian Anderson, but keep forgetting about it.

I love Sleepy Hollow! And I've been a Supernatural fan since half-way through the first season. (Basically, I got involved in it when I came home from a zoning hearing board meeting one night. Rick was bowling and I had no idea what to watch on TV. I started channel surfing and came across a bare-chested Sam; it was the episode where Dean put itching powder is Sam's clothes, although I didn't know that then. I thought, "Hello, what is this?" And the rest is history. I told you, I'm shallow. I admit it.)  IMO, it had gotten pretty bad a couple season ago with all the angels versus demons kind of stuff and I was really getting tired of it, but this past season with Cain's mark on Dean has been quite good. I hadn't fallen asleep through the episodes, so that's always good.
I have all the seasons on DVD except for this last one.

Moonlight starred Alex O-Laughlin as a vampire/private investigator. I didn't watch it when it was actually on the air (CBS, carried it, I think). But it was on Sy-Fy and I got hooked on it then. And bought the season (there was only one season) on DVD. I wouldn't have minded seeing another season. But I think he got involved in Three Rivers (I think that was the name of the hospital-type show he was working in). And when that got cancelled, he went to Hawaii 5-O. Like I said, I used to watch that, but haven't seen it in a few years now.

I like the original Star Trek and had some problems getting into TNG when it first started. And then a friend of mine talked to me. He said, "Forget about the original. Watch TNG for its own value. Don't even think about the original." When I did that, I really liked it. Turned into a big Picard fan, to the point where we have a life-size Picard in the computer room (got it at a Star Trek convention, in fact.). I really like TNG. Love George Takei, too!

@Kat0121 -- MASH was a really good series! i think i'm going to have to find some Benny Hill episodes around the internet to watch -- i enjoyed that show so much, very funny!

Lilyhammer is new to me, haven't seen that one. though, looking into it (on the internet), it looks like a really good tv show. thedarehub dot com offers it too -- free to watch, just by setting up an account.

dark comedy -- i found a great article on the 10 best dark british comedies -- http://whatculture.com/tv/10-dark-british-comedy-tv-shows-that-must-be-seen.php   they all look like they'd be interesting to watch.

i'm glad he'll be cast in the series again. yes, a really good show. i hope the show holds up, to it's past quality.
