My cat came home with a broken tail about three weeks ago.  Other than it being limp about half way down, she healed great.  No pain, no infection.  But the last couple days it's been tender and you could see the skin tearing.  I've washed it and kept it clean - still no infection and she's behaving perfectly normal.  Today it fell off (GAK!)  She seems relieved - behavior is normal - but the nub is about 1 inch of raw skin.  It's sunday and the vet is closed.  Should I wrap it (if so, how) or should I just let her do her cat thing to it - licking it - and watching for any indication of infection?

My poor sweet baby!!

This is an emergency as the exposed skin area is a portion of the spinal cord. This can leas to a severe infection and even paralysis. Does your vet have an emergency number? Is there an emergency clinic in your area?

Your cat needs the vet to clean the nub and possibly surgery to place a skin covering over the end of the tail to prevent infection. She also needs an antibiotic.

Do not attempt to wrap the tail yourself as doing so improperly can cause further damage.

You also need to try to keep her from licking/messing with her tail.

And, please keep her indoors only until your vet says otherwise.
