Good Morning.

I was talking with a student today about noise. She lives really close to Tokyo station, but even though trains run past her apartment all night she never has any trouble sleeping. She said the sound of the trains is really comforting, she sleeps a lot better knowing the world is still carrying on as usual out there.

Lots of people like white noise when they sleep. You can get your phone to play sounds like rain, the ocean or AC units while you sleep to drown out all those other sounds that might wake you up.

What do you think about white noise? What kind of sounds help you to sleep?

For me it's the sound of rain. Somehow waking up to the sound of rain drops against the window makes me feel like it's OK to have a few more minutes snooze under the covers.

I've used one of those white noise machines years ago when I was going through a short bout of insomnia.  They do work, at least for me.  Very soothing to listen to.  My favorite are ocean sounds.  I like the sound of rain also.  Did not like the frogs singing

I listen to audiobooks. I've done so since I was about 9 or 10 years old. I guess it's like someone is reading me a bedtime story and I remember how comforting that was when I was little. I may be 27 (28 on Sunday), but apparently I still like it. :)

I have one of those white noise machines.  I love it--I set it to the ocean sound.

There is a setting on my machine for the sound of trains!  I thought that was pretty crazy, who could go to sleep to the sound of trains?  But there you have it--it's comforting to some.

I have a cricket setting on mine--I did not like that.
My sister has one, but she doesn't like the ocean setting--says she finds it too melancholy.  She likes the rain.

...with the cats...
i find the rain soothing too, and sleep very well when it's raining.

something that seems to never fail at 'knocking me out' is listening to new age music. there's a setting on an ocean -- fish in coral reefs -- dvd i play sometimes that i tried the music option. the music was new age, and i had to switch to natural underwater sounds instead, because the new age music was making me feel like i was going to fall asleep.

i grew up living in a rural area, and i was used to listening to the creek that was a few hundred feet from our house as i was settling in to bed at night. it was hard to adjust to the city sounds at night, when i moved there as a young adult. now, i live in a rural area (chose to look for a house in a rural area) so it's very quiet at night here.

I grew up with window unit ACs that we ran most of the year (in Texas) but I never liked it, seemed like just machine noise to me. The ocean and rain are very soothing sounds, though. I also really like to listen to the wind - we get some great Pacific storms here and I love the howling wind, especially if I don't have to go out in it.

The house we just moved from is by the shore that has seagulls the size of roosters! There were so many of them, really loud and noisy, too, and they woke me up a lot after we moved there. But somewhere along the line I just quit hearing them. Guests would remark on the noisy seagulls and I'd wonder, "what seagulls?" LOL.

Anyway, back to the question. I don't like any noise when going to sleep, the quieter the better. If there's a lot of noise outside it doesn't help me to add more noise with a machine. I just don't sleep well until I adjust. Light affects me a lot, too, I wake up with the light so I need black-out curtains in the summer if I don't want to be awake at 4:30 every morning.

The two times I visited NYC I didn't sleep much at all either trip with all the noise and light and commotion going on down on the street all night long. Maybe I'd adjust eventually, I really don't know.

Oh I LOVE the sound of trains. Doesn't matter what time of day it is. I love them. I love watching them, too. I wish I lived closer to the tracks. I used to work in a building that was close to them and we could feel the trains going by. I loved it. No one else did. Spoil sports.

I also love the sound of rain and of course I love everything about the ocean. The sound, the smell. It's the best. I love the sounds of the seagulls too.

I need quiet to get to sleep.  Rain, even wind, will keep me awake.

I have a window air conditioner in my room, (as well as the living room) so in the summer, that drownds out any sound. I did find an app in the ap store on my phone that is all rain sounds. It's pretty cool. It has a lot of different ones to choose from. From storms, to tropical, to on a tin roof. I liked rain in the garden at first. It was big sounding drops falling in puddles kind of sound, but found myself listening to it, & not falling asleep, so tried rain under an umbrella, & that was nice. Steady & constant. I may try more apps like that. I will need them in the winter when the air isn't on, & the blind lady downstairs is listening to her books when I'm trying to go to sleep at night!

I love to fall asleep to the sound of drizzling rain. It is so peaceful to me.

For me, white noise is usually the sound of the tv, turned down very low, so I can just barely hear it. Usually on the Weather Channel or some equally boring channel.

That reminds me of when I was a kid and I used to live on a boat. I remember listening to the shipping forecast every night just before we fell asleep. It was strangely calming, something about hearing the names of all the different parts of the North Sea recited like a litany.

For some reason the phrase "Viking, Cromarty, Northern Bight" sticks in my head.
