i'm not quite sure but i think my 1 year old male cat has constipation.

i've observed him for past few days and maybe im being paranoid but i think he hasn't pooped at all..

i haven't had time to clean his litter box to be absolute sure but can anyone suggest any quick remedies for now?

taking him to the vet is on my top list and i will as soon as i get some time..

i read online about adding olive oil to his kibble but he refuses to eat it if i do.. too used to dry one i suppose..

and i have water bowls all over the house and he drinks quite a lot as well so i dunnoo.. a lil help anyone ??

Plain canned pumpkin. You can find it at the grocery store in the baking aisle near the pie fillings. Just make sure it is pumpkin and nothing else. NOT pie filling. It's a good source of fiber and has a good amount of moisture in it. Most cats like the taste as well. it's also good for diarrhea. I add about a teaspoon to their food once a day.

Weruva makes a pumpkin supplement: http://www.weruva.com/pumpkin-patch-up.php

An easy way to get more water into the cat to help move things along inside is to feed canned food with extra water. Constipation can happen if the body doesn't have enough water to move the undigestible stuff out of hte digestive tract. Fiber helps, too, but won't do much if the body is well hydrated.

Are you sure your cat hasn't pooped outside the litter box somewhere? Check under the bed, the sofa, behind furniture, etc. And definitley check the litter box. Try to make it a habit to scoop the box at least twice daily. What's in the litter box is good way to get an idea of your cat's health and if there's something of concern that might need a trip to the vet (poop too soft? pee clumps larger than usual? any spots of blood?)

Try sprinkling some Miralax in his food.  My female cat was always getting constipated, and she had to have enemas, which made her very nauseous.  Someone told us about  Miralax and she's been fine ever since.  You can just pour it like salt, he won't even know it's there.  You can get the store brand, CVS and Rite Aid Miralaxes work just fine.

@Kat0121

yeah i read about pumpkin too but didnt know whether to go for canned one or not.. okay gonna buy it first thing today ! hope it helps

@LTS3

well that's what i thought at first as well but he drinks water like mad the whole day. and if one dish is empty he meows like crazy till it's filled.

i guess the weather got hot and humid maybe that caused a water deficiency..

as far as pooping elsewhere is concerned my mom is a clean freak so no, if it had happened anywhere else in the house i'd have heard it pronto !

yeah i was just caught up with my thesis last few days so missed cleaning the litter.. i did however catch him peeing and it looked normal to me.. will check it today as well..

@Fleur4

is it okay for cats ? cuz i read not to give laxatives for humans to them

We had a heat wave last week and Mogli became constipated from not drinking enough. He's not lactose intolerant like most cats, but a small bowl of heavy cream did the trick.

Yes, some laxatives are fine for cats, as long as you give them little doses.  We gave our cat one Dulcolax, never two.  Again, store brand is fine.  But putting Miralax in her lunch every day has been the best thing for her.  Check with your own vet, but all the vets we've used encourage the Miralax daily, and if it's not enough, an occasional Dulcolax.  The last thing your little baby wants is an enema, it's very hard on their bodies! Good luck!

Try sprinkling some Miralax in his food.
Don't sprinkle Miralax directly into food. Miralax works by drawing water from the body into the digestive tract. If the body is already dehydrated to begin with, Miralax will just make the problem worse.

The correct way to use Miralax (and other similar OTC Human laxatives) for a cat is to dissolve the dose (1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon) in a few tablespoons of water and then mix it into canned food.

Always use unflavored Human medicine if that is an option. Flavored Human medicines may contain xylitol, a common sweetener that is very harmful to cats.

Thank you, that's good to know!  I usually sprinkle, but will switch now to putting it in water, then mixing it into her food!
