15 year old cat seemed to have breathing problems suddenly -xray showed chest congestion and some fluid in lungs and an irregular heartbeat. His si ter died 2 months ago and he seemed fine  but then would go in the cellar and lie down where it was cool and slept there perhaps her scent. Then came upstairs after a couple weeks and would sit on the dining room table with mom. He would just lie and stare at mom but seemed very happy as she is ill.. I'd play with him comb him he seemed to snap out whatever he was in... Made him a bed of magazines on the floor he seemed to enjoy the coolness. I then put a nice white sheet there he loved it and started sleeping there but past couple weeks stayed there more not on table as much but enjoyed drinking water out of a glass more than usual. He never drank like that when his sister was alive . Past couple days I was brushing him which i did every day and he really began to like it and became extremely friendly, i thought great. Noticed a few days ago he got a bit snippy which he had never done before. said maybe a bad day. Then I saw he was not eating much the past couple days..Went back in morning to open drapes heard a cat meow and there was moms cat on the window sill moaning cry and having trouble breathing looking for air. I could not believe my eyes. Went to vet and bad news.. Had to make very tuff decision as cat just lied in his carrier tired and not breathing to well. I was given options but it was no cure just prolong a week or so. Lasix.ultra sound, needle in chest.... Vet seemed to think it was a bit late for all of that... I said to someone that once his sister died I'll bet he'd be gone in 6 months. It has happened to two sets of cats I had and now moms cats.  He seemed fine when his sister was alive but obviously went downhill and Hid it very well. Basically heart failure. I wonder if he died of a broken heart. He hid everything so well I am still in shock. Has anyone out there seen this in other cats.......

I'm so sorry--to lose two in such a short amount of time is very hard.  My thoughts are with you.

I'm very sorry for your loss. It does seem like animals that have been together most or all of their lives can die within a very short period. Perhaps grief aggravates an existing condition or suppresses their immune systems.

Curious question. I have moms two other cats which were cremated sitting on the dining room table for months now in a very nice enclosed box with their picture on it. Moms cat after his sister passed kept sittiing and sleeping on the table.Do you think he smelled the ashes??? Or just wanted to be near mom as she always played solitaire constantly due to her illness.Or did he know he was sick. I'm still trying to grasp the sudden loss of our beloved cat and why he acted the way he did as for 14 years he never went on that table until his sister died two months ago.. I miss him sooooo, its painful.

I am so sorry, batrice. It must be really hard losing two furry family members, especially with your mother being ill. [emoji]128532[/emoji]

I'm not sure why he sat so much on the table. It's very possible he just wanted a familiar face, and your mom gave him the comfort he needed.

I'm glad your family had 15 happy years with your kitty siblings. 15 years is pretty respectable time in kitty years. Never seems long enough, though, does it? [emoji]128546[/emoji][emoji]128546[/emoji]

animals /wildlife always break my heart when they die or I see them  lying in the road. The pain it creates is sooo deep more than people I hate to say  Probably because they are just so innocent and depend on us to help them and take care of them and they give us so much love and understanding. And when something happens there is so much  guilt. But I just love them all!!!  I have always loved cats and have had many but never had to put 3 cats down in one year its hard enough with one. But these were my moms cats whom she adored(they lived with her) but with her memory gone its made it so much harder but she knew when they were there and they were so good for her.  I go to see her and its so empty there and she has not said a word about her cat not being there. He stood by her and he knew she was not well perhaps thats why he wanted to be so close and perhaps he was ill too and knew it..Her other cat who passed in January was all bones but walked around and always stuck by her side and he knew mom was not well .it just shows how cats are and thats why we love them. They are true friends..

My heart goes out to you, to lose two beautiful members of your family in such a short time. I'm sure his sadness did not do well with his illness, he truly could have died of a broken heart. Please accept my sincere condolences, I'll pray for you all to find peace. RIP beautiful baby, you were greatly loved and will live on forever in the memories you created!

My guess is that he lay on the table because of his heart problem, i.e., it was easier for him to breathe. Jamie seemed to prefer hard surfaces like that once his HCM became advanced.

I am truly sorry on the loss of your two babies. I know it is heartbreaking to lose one kitty, let alone two in such a short time. I hope in time you can think of them both with smiles. They knew how much they were loved, and loved you just as much.
RIP Sweet Kitties!
You will be missed and never ever forgotten!
