Help!!!!
I'm used to my cat vomiting hairballs once every 1-2 months. However last week I noticed more frequent vomiting that was mostly liquid and only little hairballs. Then 2 days ago I noticed that he didn't eat or drink, did not pee or poop, and was no longer affectionate. He stayed huddled in a corner all day, in a weird hunched up position like he was in pain. Yesterday afternoon I came home to a large amount of vomit, around 1x1 foot in diameter, green, with a large splatter (looked projectile). There was no hairball either. My cat was hunched up like he was in pain. We brought him to the vet immediately. An X-ray was done and they said there's a hairball the size of his kidney in his small intestine. They injected him with metoclopramide and sent us home with lactulose (3.3g/ml, 1ml twice a day), dextrose powder to mix in his water and wet food PD i/d Feline (Gastrointestinal Health) to be given 1 tbsp twice a day. At home, we were able to force feed him 1/2 tbsp of the food, gave him 3cc of dextrose water, and his dose of lactulose.
The next morning (this morning), we gave his dose of lactulose, another 1/2 tbsp of the food, and 1 cc of dextrose water. After around 15 mins he began to vomit, this time brown (the color of the food). It looked like all his oral intake since the previous night was vomited. There was also a small hairball. Unfortunately we had to go to work so we just gave him 2 more cc of dextrose water. I rushed home this afternoon to find him lying down in a more relaxed manner (not anymore the hunched position), no vomit, but still no poop. He peed though his usual amount. I just gave him 1.5 cc of lactulose and 3cc of water.
I called the vet and they said if he vomits again I should bring him in to be admitted.
Please help me! I need some questions answered:
1. Should I continue feeding him the wet food? As far as I know when GI obstruction is considered in humans they are placed on NPO. If I feed him and this makes him vomit again, won't he be more dehydrated?
2. How long can my cat last on just 10 cc of water a day?
3. When can I expect him to poop out the hairball?????
4. Will he need surgery?
5. What are the signs that he needs surgery???
