Hi There,

I had a approx 19-20year old DSH white cat , she was on thyroid (neomerc) meds one tablet in morning and one at night, she had skin cancer on right  ear tip which had been progressing a lot over last few months where the scabs were coming off and bleeding and i was maintaining this. she was eating and drinking normally. my vet recently put her on amoxy clav half tablet in morning and half tab at night, she also put her on metacam 2kg worth of liquid once a day.

recently she started eating a lot and drinking a lot, meowing loudly for food requently, meowing in the house when i was still home, at time she would turn in circles always towards the right! my vet said this could possibly be her going senile or a brain issue.

last thursday night she didnt eat her dinner, and seem a little off. friday morning she ate her tablets in tuna and ate some breakfast of tuna and dry and drank some water. i went to work and left her asleep on couch.

when i came home from work i found her on the floor in a slightly twisted awkward way lying her head down  also (there was urine on the couch ). i quickly scooped her up and took her to vet, vet suggested a possible blood clot in lower body as she wasnt standing up or wanting to stand, she held her head up at times. seemed sleepy, had cold paws. vet put her on oxygen and fluids for 1 hour and not much changed, suggesest euth.

i then took her home for a few hours before deciding to get a sec oppionion  at an emergency centre, she noticed she had pain in her lower back and pinched inbetween her toes my cat tried to meow or hiss but no sound came out. she lay on table. sometimes opening mouth and sticking tongue out a little bit. she also had continued to urinate where lying) the vet could see i needed answers as this was very sudden. she took an xray and found nothing but poo build up (my cat had not had a poo in her tray since wed night) vet suggested that she has  a low qaulity of life and that she seemed very unhappy. at this point i decided i did not want her to be like this and chose to euthanise :(

after going home and having a few days to my self i started feeling guilty and that i did not do all the i could have done to find out what the real problem was..... should i have taken bloods? why didnt the vet suggest that? was it too soon, was it temporary?

im forever wondering what happened, and why was it so sudden, did i make too of sudden choice.  i would like to know other or vets thoughts. thank you.

Hi Heidi, I am so sorry for your loss
You really did love her very much and tried hard to do right by her, I think that's all she would have wanted. Your poor girl went through a lot those last days with her body and mind breaking down, but at least she did not have to exist with such pain prolonged unnecessarily only for the sake of your feelings. Remember she is now in that wonderful place just past the rainbow bridge. I wish I could offer some advice about her medical conditions and hopefully another member out there who has gone through this can give you some reassurance. Take the time you need to mourn and heal and know you have been good to her through sickness and health.

Hi there,

I'm so sorry to read this.  But I really want to reassure you:  You gave your cat a most wonderful life for 20 years!  That's amazing!  And it sounds like she was doing really well up until the last few days.  You absolutely made a reasonable and good choice in letting her go at this point.

It is normal to second guess what we do at the end of our cats' lives.  I have two experiences, one where we chose to have a cat euthanized, and one where my cat who spent all her 17 years with me died somewhat suddenly at home.  In each case I had all kinds of second guessing.  Still do.  One was two years ago, and one was about 5 or 6 years ago.

It doesn't make it any easier really to hear that it's normal, but I want to reassure you that this is normal to second guess and it doesn't at all mean you made the wrong decision or did this too soon.  The grieving is the price we pay for the joy we get while our cats are with us.  Hang in there and take care.
