My rescue kitty, who I've only had four months and have been saving money to get more vet help, took a bad turn a few days ago, and I made the tough decision to have him pts. I'd never witnessed a euthanasia before and I was surprised at how quickly he went. I assume from the liquid in his lungs, that was expelled after death, that he had a respiratory problem in addition to his dental needs. I know it was the right decision, he was suffering, uncomfortable and probably in pain from his teeth, but I still feel so guilty. I could feel his heart through his rib cage and I felt it stop. I just wish I could have helped him more.

Also, the vet didn't give a sedative before the lethal injection. Is that normal? It was the blue liquid. Would he go unconscious before the heart stopped?

So sorry for your loss. You did what you could for the poor cat. At least he got these four months with you.

I have only ever experienced dog euthanasia since our last cat passed away at home. I believe at least with our vets the sedative is a choice for the owner. We only were talked into it once. We won't be using the sedative again since when we did use it, the dog got very uncomfortable and sick seeming (more so than previously). He was dizzzy and stumbled around before falling asleep. I definitely don't want that to be any animals last moments in life. Without the sedative, the animals seem to become unconscious quickly and then pass. This is just my experience from being with several pets in their last moments.

I'm very sorry for your loss. :rbheart: I've only had experience with a dog being euthanized without a prior sedative. He was seated, and sank down within seconds of getting the single shot (I had my arms around him). Death really came in less than a minute.

I'm so very sorry for your loss, but so very happy that precious baby had found you and was loved by you when he needed you the most. He was loved and cared for, that is all he ever wanted, and you did not let him suffer and took on the pain of a broken heart to ease the pain he was suffering from. My heart goes out to you, try not to dwell on his death but celebrate the love you two shared. RIP sweet kitty!

I am so sorry for your loss.  You did all that you could and he knew that he was loved.

I have heard of kitties being PTS both ways, 2 shots and 1 shot.   I have had it done both ways.  From what I have read I kind of lean towards the one shot.

I am truly sorry for your loss. I am glad though that sweet kitty found you and had you to love him for those four months. He needed you and you were there for him. He knew what it was to feel love and that is all any kitty truly wants. You loved him and he knew that. He loved you in return.
RIP Sweet Kitty!
You will never be forgotten!
