Some cats are just prone to having crystals, and some aren't.  I don't think it's necessary to arbitrarily put a cat on special prescription food when there is no need.  Having your new kitten on an all wet diet is a good start, and then IF he develops problems in the future, then definitely  put him on that food.

I've had nine cats so far, and NONE of them have ever had crystals.  Only one has ever even had a UTI.  So that's what I mean by some cats are just prone to it and others aren't.

As far as when to get your new littlel guy neutered, I'm surprised he isn't already.  You must not have gotten him from a shelter, huh?  Normally shelters will spay/neuter before adopting them out, at least in my area.  My boys were both done at 8 weeks.  I've always heard that the earlier it's done, the more loving the males will be.  All I can tell you is that both my males are real love bugs.

The best preventative measure is to feed only canned food with extra water added
You don't need any specific urinary formula. Dr. Lisa of Catinfo.org cautions against using urinary foods because they contain acidifiers which help break up crystals and such but also overly acidifies the urine which can cause other issues. You can read more at http://catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth Dr. Lisa also goes into why many vets misdiagnose urinary issues. Sometimes it's not an ifection but rather an inflammation or even cystitis and treatment is very different.
