Hi there - I wasn't sure where to post this. I'm just looking for ideas and support.

Very recently my cat Missy/Baby Girl (my son calls her the latter) died very unexpectedly at just over 3 years old. She was an indoor cat that got out ocassionally (SHE WAS SO SNEAKY!) but 95% of the time was indoors, but was always fine when she got out.

When we found her, it was after she had gotten out the night before. I saw her throughout the night as she will sneak by the window I leave open for her to come back through and pokes her head in and then RUNS lol.... Saw her up until about midnight. The next morning she was found by my neighbors, underneath their unused car (her favorite spot when she got out). It looked like she was sleeping. My first thoughts were, okay she got hit by a car and crawled there, or something to that effect. Though she had no visible injuries, I thought, maybe a head injury or something internal. You know, the usual.

However, when we had the x-ray done, there were know physical injuries present. So I coughed up the money for a necropsy and had it done, because she was my freakin baby.

Fast forward to two days ago - her necropy comes back as DEATH UNDETERMINED/UNKNOWN. They could not find the cause of death, even though I specifically told them that if cause was undetermined and there were still tests that COULD BE DONE, that I would fork out more money for it, but they never contacted me, just sent the results. I spoke to the doctor and asked what exactly they looked at - she showed no signs of heart disease (if she had it, it went undiagnosed - that was my second thought after the X-ray failed to provide answers). No poisoning (she didn't get into anything while outside). No viral infections or illnesses. No clots. No injuries or organ failure. Nothing "off" with stomach contents. ALL of the tests for cat diseases were negative. No other environmental toxins - serum was normal. EVERY SINGLE TEST AND EXAMINATION THEY DID WAS NORMAL - the vet said, she should not have just died like this. She was in perfect health and it looks like nothing they could see killed her.

So, in other words, my cat dropped dead from absolutely NOTHING?

*** could cause this? Would the necropsy doctor be able to tell if she was strangled or had allergies that caused build up of snot (maybe she stopped breathing)?

By the way - she exhibited NO symptoms whatsoever, but I know cats like to hide their pain.... I just wish I could have saved her. If I had tried harder to catch her or stop her from escaping, maybe she would still be alive. I also DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY FOUND NO CAUSE OF DEATH. I mean, -something- must have killed her, or she's still be here for christs sake!!! :(

Oops - I meant "NO" physical injuries. I typed "know" by accident.

She could have thrown a blood clot and had a stroke. Or she could have had a seizure and went into a coma. These could be possible causes that the vet might not be able to determine. I'm sure there are others too that I can't think of. I'm so so sorry this happened to you!

First, I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of Missy. Sudden deaths like this are hard to come to terms with, especially in a health young cat.

I guess my only question would be who conducted the necropsy.

We're they able to examine her brain?

To answer one of your questions...
If she were strangled or this was an intentional act, or, even if she choked, there would certainly be obvious evidence of this to the doctor performing the necropsy. They would certainly look for these things given the circumstances of Missy's death.

I've watched a necropsy done. They check all internal organs, check all along the small/large intestine, ears, throat...

I guess the only thing I could think of that might get missed is if she had an anaphylactic reaction to something that caused nearly immediate death. Would this prevent the body from showing an external reaction to this? Would anything show up in bloodwork, etc? These would be questions to ask your vet. I simply don't know the answers.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss and I know that the lack of answers after doing a necropsy is like another blow to your grief.

Can the necropsy find anti-freeze? It might have been that if she was under a car.
