Not sure if I should be posting this here or elsewhere...

Anyway, a foster kitty of mine (Patterson) had gone to another foster home and was not doing well.  According to the foster mom, he had terrible diarrhea, was lethargic, and just not a happy camper.  So we made arrangements to get him back, and it was then I realized that I had no idea how much he weighed.  I use a tiny kitchen scale to weigh my kittens that only weighs up to 5 pounds, and Paddy is a good 8 pounder.  How am I going to dose him with Metronidazole without knowing how much he weighs?

Well, fast forward and I talked to the head of our group.  With her permission I put up a few ads requesting donations of baby scales or money to go towards buying one.  Within an hour of the Facebook post going live, a wonderful lady said she'd buy us a baby scale from Amazon!  It weighs up to like 50 pounds so I can even use it for small dogs, and it is much easier to use than the kitchen scale.

The next day, another wonderful person volunteered to buy our group ANOTHER baby scale!  It will be going to one of our other foster moms, who is dealing with a lot of sick kittens herself.  Mind you, these are not cheap scales..maybe about $55 a pop...and that was not an expense the group could cover when we can spay, vaccinate, and FeLV/FIV test a cat for that much.  It was so wonderful to see people being generous and stepping forward to help out whether others were needy.

In rescue, we sometimes get really jaded because it seems we see a lot of the worst of humanity...not just in the treatment of the animals we rescue, or the irresponsible breeding that is commonplace, but even at our adoption events...people think we should be treating them with kid gloves because they're going out of their way to rescue an animal...well, we have to be thinking about the animal's wellbeing as well...but every now and then, people really surprise us in a good way.

And it isn't just small-ticket, comparatively, items...we have had a local company donate washing machines to us to help us with our laundry...local animal lovers donate the entire cost of a heartworm treatment for a large dog, or an amputation, or a special surgery.  Sometimes we really are blessed by the kindness and generosity of those around us.

Tomorrow my new scale will arrive.  I have already thanked the donor in person and by email but I want to do something else nice for her...any thoughts?  I could let her name some kittens....LOL....

That's really wonderful news! Congratz on the new scale! May it last for many many years!

Maybe instead of her naming a kitten, you can name one of her choice after her!
or you could make her thank you card and include the picture of the kitten(s) she's immediately helping with her donation

The rescue I fostered for has 'baby showers' when they rescue pregnant animals.  They put the wish list up on amazon.com and Amazon tracks what has been bought and what is still needed.  Then the link is posted on Facebook w/ a picture of the mom.

Yes, that is an excellent idea!    And the best of it, it can be used time and again, as an extra privilegie for donors.
