Hey everybody, we got this kitten and his mom is a Tuxedo, but not sure what the breed is. Does anybody know what he might be. The vet says Siamese. Any ideas?
Although he is pointed (seal-point, to be exact), it is unlikely he is Siamese.
Either,
A - his father was a pointed cat (i doubt purebred Siamese).
or
B - his father was a carrier of the pointed gene, but didn't appear pointed.
The pointed gene is recessive, meaning that both parents must be carriers of the gene in order for it to be present in the litter.
Since the mom is tuxedo-patterned, it must mean she was a carrier of the pointed gene. And the father was definitely a pointed gene-carrier. Whether or not he was a pointed cat himself is unknown.
Your kitty most likely came from a litter of several kittens, only half of the litter being pointed.
I'm unsure what the correct term for him is, but I have seen "mitted point" or something along those lines floating around in the forums.
The 'mitted' part describes the white paws, and muzzle and blaze.
Im pasting in my answer from a very similiar tread I answered today, the answer is essentielly the same.
Fluffy Nebelung gave also roughly the same answer.
"Yeah, you can surely say she is a snowshoe look alike. Technically it will be Seal mitted point. Ie, black point with lotsa of white. Or if you so want, a black and white tuxedo point...
I mean, she carres exactly the same colors as all her littermates, and parents - probably the mom.
We KNOW she cant be purebred, as only one of her littermates is another snowshoe-look alike. The other two are more common tuxedos.
IF she is part showshoe for real, we cant know. Looking genetic, the only we know, is she has double point genes. Its not even necessary any of her parents is a point. But both must be at least carriers of the point gene.
So the parents, are either both just carriers of the point gene, but themselves not points. Mom prob tuxedo.
One point and one carrier, of any looks. Mom prob carries white and black.
And yes, as her darkest places is black, "seal", she is a black carrier, and she will darken up with time. More and more as the years get by.
