...with the cats...
recently, i switched to a new bank. this week i've been updating account info online at various websites. when updating one account, their customer service number even connected me to Ireland! very cool!

these days there's so much we are able to do online. so, for today's Question of the Day, let's talk about the things we do online, as well as delve a little into programs/apps that we use/enjoy.

On your computer, tablet, smart phone, or other device --

Do you pay bills online?

Are you a "gamer'? If so, what is your favorite game?  (can be a game that came installed on your device, a game you installed yourself, or even a game that you play at a website -- like our popular 'Geography Game' here in 'The Cat Lounge' at TCS)

Do you do any daily crossword puzzles, sudoku, word search, or other at any website(s)?

How about books --

        Do you read e-books?

Do you use an app, like Kindle for PC (or similar)? Or an app from your local library system?

Do you use a photo sharing website, like Photobucket or Picasa?

How about a 'screen saver' on your device? Do you have one?

Do you watch TV shows and movies, or listen to music online?

What about VoIP service? Do you use that to call friends or relatives?

How about texting, if you're on a smart phone?

Do you use the internet to figure out or learn how to --

        Repair things?

Find recipes? Or learn how to cook/bake things?

        Construct things?

Do you catch up on the news (local, national, or world) online?

Any other programs or apps that you like/enjoy or use a lot?

i'll start!

yes, i pay bills online. any bill that can be paid online, i prefer to pay online. i'm always careful to note my payment confirmation or transaction number.

i'm really not what i'd call a 'gamer'. however, there are a few games that came installed on my computer that i very much enjoy -- Mahjong Titans, FreeCell, and Solitaire. i installed a jigsaw puzzle game called BrainsBreaker, with which i'm also easily able to create jigsaw puzzles out of pretty much any photo, picture, etc i find on the internet. i enjoy that game very much too. i also enjoy very much the games in 'The Cat Lounge' here at TCS!

i don't usually find the time to do daily crosswords, and etc online. but i do have some websites bookmarked that offer those.

while i do enjoy the feel of an actual book in my hands to read, i tend to accumulate books until it ends up looking like they're trying to take over my home! so, i use the kindle for pc app on my computer to read books. i did have the app from my local library system on my computer so i could borrow e-books from them, but i didn't enjoy the time limit placed on the books i borrowed. that reminded me of my school days, when we'd be told to read up to a certain point in books. if i really enjoyed reading the book, i wanted to read further in it! these days i don't always find the time to read every day, so the time limit on borrowed books doesn't work well for me.

yes, i use Photobucket. i find it easy to upload, edit, and share photos from.

right now, i have a photo of my snick as the screen saver on my computer. i do switch the screen saver out every so often. here's the pic i'm using now --

i love this pic of my girl!

i watch tv show/movies as well as listen to music online, pretty much every day. i also 'stream' to my tv set via a roku.

recently, i looked into VoIP service, but that didn't end up working out for me. so now it's landline phone calls, emails, or letters for me.

texting...i know what it is and have texted before. maybe it's just me, but i really don't enjoy texting. but then, i prefer to be without phone when i'm outside doing things.

i use the internet to figure out how to do things, learn how to repair things, and find recipes and learn how to cook/bake things. it's a great resource! i've found plans for constructing planter boxes online, and then constructed them. i've found instructions on how to repair things online, and then either done the repairs myself or figured out that that particular repair is best left to the professionals. and almost all my recipes have been found online.

i wouldn't say that i 'follow' the news. but i do scan the headlines each day online, then read probably 4-6 or so news articles that catch my interest.

vueminder (lite). that's the free computer calendar app(-lication) i use. it's easy to use, and for a busy person it's a great help in keeping things organized. i'm even able to transfer older events over to a flash drive from vueminder, which i do every so often. i make note of many things in my calendar, some are important things which i'll need to look up again -- so i save past events. oh, and it's not an app but i just changed my 'theme' in my web browser, firefox. my previous theme was cats, domestic as well as wild/big cats pics. my new theme is called Red Cats (green flavor), here's a screenshot of the webpage for that add-on --

little kitty figures for the 'buttons'......so cute!

okay, now it's your turn!

Do you pay bills online?   I pay all my bills but rent online.  I would pay my rent that way too if I could.  That's the only check I still wright.  I moved into this apartment 10 years ago and I am still writing this address in on my checks, they still have my address from 10 years ago.  I also check my bank accts and balance my 'checking' acct online.

Are you a "gamer'? If so, what is your favorite game?  (can be a game that came installed on your device, a game you installed yourself, or even a game that you play at a website -- like our popular 'Geography Game' here in 'The Cat Lounge' at TCS)  I am  not a gamer.

Do you do any daily crossword puzzles, sudoku, word search, or other at any website(s)?  I have never really gotten into crossword puzzles

How about books --

Do you read e-books?  Sometimes, but I also read hard copy books

Do you use an app, like Kindle for PC (or similar)? Or an app from your local library system?  I have an older e-reader that still works.  I doubt that I will  replace it when it gives out.

Do you use a photo sharing website, like Photobucket or Picasa? No  I used to use it a little when that was how we could post pictures here.

How about a 'screen saver' on your device? Do you have one?  Yes I have different ones of the grandkids and kitties for wallpaper.  Right now Bubbles for screen saver..

Do you watch TV shows and movies, or listen to music online?  No I have cable.

What about VoIP service? Do you use that to call friends or relatives?  No  I just have a cell phone.

How about texting, if you're on a smart phone?  Very rarely.  I never really got into the whole texting thing.

Do you use the internet to figure out or learn how to --

        Repair things?  No

Find recipes? Or learn how to cook/bake things?  All new recipes that I have tried for some time now have come from the internet.

Construct things?  Occasionally.  I just used a video on line to put together the kitties new Lotus Cat Tower

Do you catch up on the news (local, national, or world) online?

Any other programs or apps that you like/enjoy or use a lot?

I pay some bills online. Others I prefer to pay by check.

I occasionally play games. I have some Sim City games insalled on my computer. I used to have the Myst game series. I have the Machinarium game which I'm currently stumped on. I have a few games on my phone: Tetris, Minion Rush, a mah jong game, City Island, a Sonic the Hedgehog game, and a hidden object game.

I've never liked crossword puzzles and other similar games.

I prefer actual books to an e-book.

I have a Google Photo album to store some pictures.

My compter screen saver is the bubbles one. My rescue cat likes to watch the bubbles and try to "catch" them

I listen to music online, usually the local classical music station.

I dont use VOIP.

I rarely text on my phone.

I have used the I nternet to figue out how to repair things (broken sink plunger, adjusting water level in toilet, adjusting latch so door can close) and to find recipies.

Defintely check the news online. I go to the local newspapers and tv stations and more national web sites like CNN.

If so, what is your favorite game?  (can be a game that came installed on your device, a game you installed yourself, or even a game that you play at a website -- like our popular 'Geography Game' here in 'The Cat Lounge' at TCS)        I like the games we play here, I do have some games installed from Steam.com but I don't play often. I'm a console girl. I have my Wii and WiiU.

Do you read e-books?   No. I prefer a physical book.

Do you use an app, like Kindle for PC (or similar)? Or an app from your local library system?  No

Do you use a photo sharing website, like Photobucket or Picasa?  No

How about a 'screen saver' on your device? Do you have one? On my computer I have a picture of a mama tiger and her cub. On my phone, it's a picture of Lilith

Do you watch TV shows and movies, or listen to music online?   Yes. I love my Netflix. I also watch stuff through my Amazon Prime.

What about VoIP service? Do you use that to call friends or relatives?  No

How about texting, if you're on a smart phone?  Yes

Do you use the internet to figure out or learn how to --

Do you pay bills online?

Rick pays some things online.

Are you a "gamer'? If so, what is your favorite game?  (can be a game that came installed on your device, a game you installed yourself, or even a game that you play at a website -- like our popular 'Geography Game' here in 'The Cat Lounge' at TCS)

I'm pretty basic with games on my cell phone. I have Angry Birds, but don't play that much anymore. Bubble Shooter (don't play it much), Candy Crush (makes me crazy), Word Twist (really enjoy that), etc.

Do you do any daily crossword puzzles, sudoku, word search, or other at any website(s)?

No.

How about books --

Do you read e-books?  My Nook is my life. I'm constantly downloading books to my Nook. I'd be lost without it at this point.

Do you use an app, like Kindle for PC (or similar)?  Or an app from your local library system? I have a Nook with the Kindle app, so it's the best of both worlds. Quite often, I may find a book that's available only through Kindle and I don't want to miss out on the book. That's why I got the Kindle app. It works. Our public library has Ebooks to go and I use OverDrive to get library books.

Do you use a photo sharing website, like Photobucket or Picasa?

No. I have my own website with space. I pay for it annually, but then it's mine and I can do whatever I want with it. I have my own domain and it's easier for me that way.

How about a 'screen saver' on your device? Do you have one?

My screensaver is text.....It says: "Driver picks the music; shotgun shuts his cakehole". Any Supernatural fan would completely understand.

Do you watch TV shows and movies, or listen to music online?

The closest I get is listening to music on my iPod. I do download music from iTunes and from Amazon. Sometimes, if I'm on the computer working on a graphic, I'll turn music on, but it's always from my own stuff.

What about VoIP service? Do you use that to call friends or relatives?

No. That's what cell phones are for.

How about texting, if you're on a smart phone?

I text with everybody! Rick and I stay in contact throughout the day. I text with my son, my sister, niece and nephew. Since Rick's dad passed away, I've been texting a lot with my BIL (Rick's sister's DH), who has a very dry sense of humor and we get along well. There have been times that he's made me laugh myself silly. He's hilarious. I kind of look forward to our little texting sessions in the early morning. I stay in contact with people now more with texting than anything.

Do you use the internet to figure out or learn how to --

        Repair things? Yes

Find recipes? Or learn how to cook/bake things? Oh heavens, yes.

Construct things? Well, I look at them. Doesn't necessarily mean I'd have the guts to try them.

Do you catch up on the news (local, national, or world) online? The Huffington Post is my home page. I try to keep in touch with news, but for the most part, I do that through television at night with our local news, followed by ABC news. I also read the newspaper every day.

Any other programs or apps that you like/enjoy or use a lot?

I love to mess around with graphics, so I use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Creative Suite 6 for InDesign. Still have Paint Shop Pro 7 and X, but I've found myself moving steadily toward PhotoShop now, since I've been using it at work.

I pay as many bills as possible on line. I only write less than a handful of checks per month; like the guy who mows our lawn.

I am not a gamer.  I do, however, belong to Second Life which is a virtual world.  So not a game at all, no objectives. My avatar is a reflection of myself, with friends (some of which I've met in the "real world"), a home, socializing via art and music events.  I am not as active there as I used to be but still enjoy popping in a couple of times a week, mostly to create in-world photography.

The only other game I play is Backgammon on my cell phone.  Which I beat the computer at more times than not - on the highest level available. I really don't get tired of it, and it's great for passing time on the subway to and from my job.

I love books, and while I prefer an actual book in hand, I have grown to love my Kindle Paperwhite.  It's made reading much easier, as I find aging is not kind to the eyes due to glare mostly.  It has it's limitations but has gotten me back to reading more regularly than I had been in recent years.

I use Flickr and Instagram to display/share photos.

My screensavers are various and ever changing.  Usually a photo I shot of flowers, or the cats lol.

I don't watch TV or movies on line.  I do have Pandora (music) on my cell phone which is well worth the few dollars a month.

No VOIP.

I rarely text.  Mostly it's between Tom and I to keep in touch.  Sometimes, my siblings or friends (even less so).  I still prefer to pick up the phone than text.  My staff will on occasion text me if they are late for work instead of sending an email.  I don't mind this - since it's very few that do this.  The ones that do are people that I am more friendly with.

I use the internet to research everything under the sun.  I'm a non-stop "look it upper".  I do utilize it for news since most days I'm at the office from early to late, and it's the only way to find out what's happening in the world.

Other apps? I have a slew of photography related ones on my cell phone. While I have a Nikon DSLR, the phone is always with me but sometimes those photos need slight editing or, I'm looking to create something more interesting from the picture.  My favorite and most used is Snapseed.

@Denice -- i mentioned that i have just switched banks. my first order of checks was free, which is great because (like you) i write very few actual checks. my bank even told me that since i write so few checks, they can 'do up' about a dozen blank checks for me/my account as i need them -- free of charge. i just need to call ahead and they'll get them ready. a dozen would last me at least a year probably.

my mom used to do crossword puzzles. i enjoy the challenge of them, though i don't do them very often.

'Occasionally.  I just used a video on line to put together the kitties new Lotus Cat Tower'  isn't it great to find good (and visual type) instructions for these kind of things? i just love that. i'm going to be replacing the drive belt on my older lawn tractor very soon. and being able to watch a video on doing this will be very helpful to me. i'm not knowledgeable about mechanical things, so being able to watch a video makes replacing the drive belt possible for me.

btw -- how are your cats liking their new Lotus Cat Tower?

that Machinarium game looks interesting. it looks more 'my speed' than games that require what feels like eye-to-hand coordination to me.

how interesting, that one of your cats likes to watch and try to 'catch' the bubbles on your screen saver! now i'm wondering if my jaspurr might find that screen saver interesting...

@Kat0121 -- awww......thank you! snick is my little sweetheart.

i watch shows/movies/etc through my amazon prime too. i really enjoy the show Orphan Black, which i watch there. and i enjoy documentaries and shows that take me to see parts of the world that i'll (in all likelihood) never travel to to see in person. i have Hulu, but have become very annoyed with a certain type of commercial, where the advertiser seems to want free marketing feedback and basically holds me hostage for varying lengths of time waiting for me to choose which 'ad experience' i prefer and then (after i refuse to choose) they choose for me and play a commercial. i don't mind regular commercials, i just ignore them. i'm seriously considering switching to netflix because of that. i do enjoy the tv shows and movies available through hulu though.

yes, allrecipes dot com! that's my 'go to' recipe website. i especially like their ability to search by ingredients -- i've used that countless times to help find recipes to use up partial packages of this and that which i have sitting in my fridge. i do like several other recipes websites -- including smitten kitchen and the recipe critic.

'and of course the important sites like TMZ, x17online, Radar Online, Daily Mail and Media Take out
'
oh, exciting! i'm always interested in new websites to check into!

@Winchester -- so you read pretty much anywhere you want to? i have a kindle device, as well as the kindle for pc app (that i mentioned). i haven't used my kindle device for probably over a year. however, when the 'top' (and sides) is put on over the deck to make the catio (in about two years, give or take) i can see myself sitting in the catio with snick and jaspurr and reading with my kindle device. i'm sure i'll be very glad that i have the kindle device then.

'Do you use the internet to figure out or learn how to --   Construct things? Well, I look at them. Doesn't necessarily mean I'd have the guts to try them.'  i think that's very wise. there are some things that are simply 'beyond' my capabilities to repair or construct myself. i think it's important to know what might be beyond our capabilities.

i end up reading a lot of articles and watching many Huff Post news stories online. that's probably because a good portion of the news i read online is though my AOL email acct, which has 'Top Stories' in moving block sequences on the main email page.

my actual physical daily newspapers, i only use for starting the wood stove. but with my local newspaper subscription comes access to their website, and i enjoy reading articles there. i really enjoy the local news and local 'human interest' types stories i read there.

backgammon! that's a game i love to play.  i've never played it online or on my computer, because i always assumed there would need to be a second player. now that you mention that backgammon can be played against a computer, i'll have to go check out the game that came installed on my computer! another game i love is cribbage, just a wonderful game. now i'm wondering if there may also be a cribbage game available which is played against the computer. i must check into these!

i can totally understand about aging not being kind to the eyes. it's the small print that's hard for me to read -- i have a couple magnifiers i use, a pair of (dollar store) glasses (the wearing kind) that magnify and an actual hand held magnifying glass (which i like because i can move the magnifying glass further away from the print to make the print even larger). i haven't had any problem being able to read on either my kindle device or app (on my pc), but i can increase the size of the print on either kindle if i ever need to.

that's something that i love about the internet -- that we can use it to research (literally) everything under the sun!
