I have three kittens. Callie is 12 weeks, Lil Bit is 11 weeks and Bell is 6-8 weeks old. I am pretty new to all this. I feed them can food twice a day and I keep out dry food at all times. Since I switched them to a glass bowl they have been drinking water great.

Yesterday I did something stupid I bought a can of bonless skinless salmon and gave them some. They loved it. Since then they all three have had diarrhea.

My question is do I withhold food for 12 hours for this then give chicken and rice. Or do I go ahead and let them eat and it will settle down. I was just trying to give them a treat not hurt them. Now my Callie is wanting to eat. She is my nibbler its like she is always eating but its just a few bites then shes done for about an hour.

Please help.

Since the diarrhea was caused by the sudden change in food (salmon fine but they probably had too much all at once), they should be fine if you just put them back on the food they were on before.  I don't think withholding food is necessary because their intestines are probably just fine, not inflamed.  If the diarrhea doesn't clear up in a few days, you might want to get some Amforol from your vet -- it treats any intestinal bacterial things that show up from food poisoning.  I used it one for a mama and kittens who ate a can of cat food (good brand but evidently a bad batch!) but they were vomiting every 15 minutes, so they definitely had something.  It worked by the second dose.  Yours are not vomiting so I think it was just the sudden change in food and they should be fine on their old diet.

Since they are young kittens they need to eat several times a day. Sounds like the diarrhea will clear up soon. Are they doing better now?

How is it going?  If the diarrhea isnt no better, there is quite a lot you could try to do.  Including your original suggestion is among the tool chest.   :)

Although its more often used on a little older kittens or cats.

Btw, essentially the same recipe is also use for humans. Make sure the rice is well boiled, ie cooked too much, so to say.

Water from such a over cooked rice, + added salts, make an excellent base for a nice anti-diarrhea pedialyte...   another tool in the chest.

What do you do when they beg for human food? They do this mostly when I cook breakfast. They love eggs and I fix one for them to share from to time. But they also beg for the breakfast gravy. Callie tried to take my two year olds food this morning and Lil Bit got in my plate yesterday before I could stop her. I hate seeing them want for something they cant have.

Funny. I just made scrambled eggs myself, and three of my four ate some. Mine love mashed potatoes and other items. If you don't mind sharing, they can have a taste in their food area. That's up to you, but you may need to put them in a room so you can eat in peace. You have to train them not to get on the table, which takes time.

I share a little of what they can have.  They are curious and want to know what it is.   After a while mine stopped asking.  Sadly, gravy is probably a no no.  Eggs are ok.  Just make sure you don't give them anything w/onions or garlic.  there are a few other bad things like grapes, raisins, mushrooms - I don't know all of them off the top of my head.

Sometimes I'll have my husband grill part of what we are having w/o anything on it for the cats.

I dont mind sharing. I love seeing them eat and enjoying what they eat. The one that worries me is Bell she eats like she is starving every time she eats. She is so boney other than her pot belly afterwards. But I also remember Lil Bit doing this the first few weeks I had her. After she figured out I would feed her daily she slowed down.

Bell may need extra food for awhile. Has she been wormed?
