I am nearly out of cat food for Rogue. I just paid my rent so I am flat broke and I have been rather sick for a while so I haven't made nearly enough money to go out and get food for her until next Thursday. I used the last of her canned food this morning and have about three days left of kibble, maybe less.

With that in mind, I do have a little food myself I am planning on giving her once I run out. I have some frozen chicken, some frozen broccoli and some eggs. I still have some Lysine powder that I mix when giving her wet food. I am planning on making a cat chicken soup type thing to tide her over until I can get her cat food again. I don't know where to start though. I know not to put in any salt or other stuff, but how much should I make and will it be enough nutrition for her? Hell, I don't know if she'll even eat it since she has never been very fond of chicken or straight up meat. She does like her broccoli though.

No, that would not be a nutritious food to give to your cat.

If you want to do home cooked food, even temporarily, please read this for more info and recipes: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/264153/home-cooked-cat-food-resources You would likely need to buy supplements and such to make any of the home cooked recipes.

Could someone buy you enough cat food to last until you are in a better financial situation? Or maybe a friend or relative who has cats and can spare some extra food?

I can probably get food somewhere from someone. I'm just posting this just in case I have to resort to extreme circumstances. Getting the info before things become a crisis. I did borrow a little money from someone yesterday, but it went into the wrong account and as a consequence, that money went somewhere else automatically. I may be able to buy her some more food in the next couple of days, and I have enough to last her until then.

One of our local shelters has a 'community kitchen' where people who need food for their pets can pick up some cans or kibble that other people have donated.  You might check to see if your area has a shelter like that where you could get enough food for your kitty to tide you over for a few days.

I had no idea shelters did that! Thank you I will check right now!

I can't help but feel a little guilty though. My shelter depends on donations and I don't want to take food out of a shelter cat's mouth if I can avoid it. I will go though if it means Rogue might go hungry. It is kinda dumb but I swore to her when I took her in that she would never go hungry again and I'm going to keep that promise.

Not all shelters have food they can offer to community members, but if one in your area does, don't feel guilty--that's why they offer that, to help the community!

I don't think it's anything to feel guilty about. May shelters (though not all) have partnerships with pet food companies and either receive donations or food at a greatly reduced rate. It's likely that the food in the pet pantry is food that individuals have donated.

If your shelter does have a pet pantry, you can always return the favor and donate food when you are in a better financial situation.

You beat me to it, CatPack! I was going to suggest borrowing now if there's an option and then donating--or volunteering--later, when things are easier.

If it's only going to be 3 days or so, feeding cooked chicken and eggs should be fine. Go easy on the broccoli though; cats aren't meant to have a lot of fiber and that could cause tummy trouble. My cats like baked chicken best, but some people boil it. Cooked chicken is commonly recommended by vets for upset tummies, and they usually say you can feed it for a week or so without any problem. But if it's going to be any longer than that you'll want to get something more balanced. If you have even a dollar you can get a big can or a couple small cans of cheap cat food---at least it's balanced.

And, yeah, if your local shelter has a pet food pantry, don't feel bad about taking advantage of it. Just make a donation when you're in a better financial situation and it'll all work out :D.

My local Humane Society has a pet food bank. They give away pet food that has been donated to them.  Maybe yours does too

I definitely wouldn't feel guilty about getting help from a shelter. Most shelters have a program where they feed one kind of food (the one I worked at did and was on a plan with Science Diet) so any donated cat food or dog food would go to someone in need so you wouldn't be taking away from a shelter kitty. :)

That is exactly what our Humane Society does. They are also on a plan with Science Diet.

If the shelter doesn't have anything, it might be worth asking the vet, too: our vet collects food, kitty litter, and other items for a pet food pantry or shelter. And those places can be very unusual! I was just searching to see what resources we have locally (I live in Maine) and found that some food pantries for humans may receive and then distribute pet food. In my county, there's a church, a library, and an animal control office that have pet food banks, though some of them have very, very limited hours and foods.

I agree with @Willowy that a few days of chicken and eggs wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if your cat will eat them!

I wish I could help you. I have a half bag of high protein Whiskas (not much choice) that I need to give away. It was opened no more than 2 weeks ago. I hate to waste food as there are starving mouths out there. :(

Would you be willing to mail that food to me Wild Horse? It may not come in time to help out Rogue, but I do feed a pair of Siamese ferals and I'm sure they would love the food. I'm working on catching them and getting them spayed.

If I had to resort to chicken and eggs, it would only be for a couple of days at the most. I only give broccoli as a treat since she loves it so much. I was going to mix a little in to tempt her since I don't know if she'll eat her concoction.

You might also try going into a pet store that hosts pet adoptions. They may help you and a rescue group may help also.Maybe even post an ad on Craigslist , but be careful.Definately go ask a shelter. Your cat may like broccoli but nutrionally cats need protein and supplements they have no need for veggies or fruit.I know this is a long shot but if you live in CA in the San Francisco bay area I will give you some food.
