I have a 13 yo Male cat. The other day he was sitting at my feet and got spooked for some reason. He jumped and fled to the other room and I noticed where he had been sitting was a Tooth. I managed to get the cat and look in his mouth and he has a large hole where the fang tooth was. I have been feeding my cats some special kitty soft food trying to put some weight on this cat. As the tooth was not surgically removed it has a large hole. This morning I looked in his mouth and it appeared that it was dry socketing but my husband thinks it is the wet food getting stuck in the hole. Any ideas.

Since I started the wet food I have noticed several of the will have vomited some but the cause is unknown. The cats would have hairball vomit before I started using the wet food. I have fed all the cats premium dry cat food for years. The latest brand is called Wholesome. I had to chose a cheaper premium brand before as I am on a fixed income and I will have more income available soon but I need to figure out what might be the problem. This one cat has always been skinny. He and his brother some times have sinus issues.

I got Feline 3 to give to all my cats but I just put frontline on all the cats so I am going to wait a few days before I give them the shots.

We are also fighting fleas in the house and as I am allergic to being bitten I know right away when the fleas have taken up homesteading. I have 5 cats 2 are Maine coon(sp) and the other 3 are DTC. I also have 2 dogs to round out the household.

Any advise

I can't tell you why your cat lost his fang, but from what I've read, it is NOT normal for this to occur.  I would say a Vet visit is in order.because it could be indicative of other mouth issues.

As to occassional vomiting, that is not hairball related, this is also not really  normal.  It does happen every once in awhile, just like to does to humans, but if it happens with any regularity, something is wrong.  Could be that someone eats too fast on occasion, or someone eats too much on occasion, or someone has an issue with an ingredient in that food.  I cannot find that food when I google it, so cannot tell you if it seems good or bad, but IMHO, any wet food is better than kibble, overall.  And some foods that lots of people that are awful are actually half decent, like Fancy Feast CLASSICS

Anyway, as to the vomiting, we would need more information, like how often, how soon after eating, what the consistency (digested food, undigested, brown, green, yellow, clearish), etc. in order to try to help you with that.  But since you need to take the one guy to the Vet anyway, perhaps you should mention the vomiting and see what they think.  Have all the info I mentioned above handy though.  They'll need it as well

I cannot tell how soon after the meal but normally a couple of hours. As to who it is also is difficult as we will see a couple of the cats dry heave. Some of the vomit has food some does not. Unless we actually see the cats vomit we cannot be 100% sure who it is.

I am fighting fleas and I need to give them their Feline 3 shots but I wanted to wait a few days after treating them for fleas before I give then their shots.

I keep checking my one cat that lost his fang and I am not seeing infection and he is not in alot of pain. I will have to get him in as soon as I can.

I'm not sure that the tooth loss means an infection means it would be right there where you could see it...could be somewhere under the gumline.  How do his other teeth and his gums look?  Does his mouth look good overall?  Are his gums all nice and pink...not red and puffy at all?

As to the vomiting, since it's "all over the place" as far as who, when, what, etc. that's really almost impossible to pin point anything
.  Since I can't find that food by googling, can you tell us any more about it.  Is there more to the name?  You're in the U.S. so I can't figure out why I can't pull it up
.  If YOU can, can you copy and past the ingredients?  How long have they been on it?

Is this the kibble you're feeding? http://www.sportmix.com/cat/wholesomesChickenMealRice.php

I think his mouth needs looking at. I was talking to my vet about Asha's teeth - one of her fangs is dead. I was advised it's far better for it to stay in, as having a lower fang only can cause gum damage over time - the remaining fang hits the exposed gum and can cause problems.

I can't help with the vomiting though. As is said above, it's kind of important to work out who's doing it first ;)

Yes that is the wholesome that I am feeding all the cats. I have been feeding it for about 2 years I just started adding a teaspoon of Special Kitty Turkey and Giblets dinner and Chunky Chicken tuna dinner. I give a teaspoon in the morning and evening to everyone I only use one can at a time. Before the vomit was more hairballs. The latest when we returned home was clear and wet it had soaked in to the bedding so it is hard to tell but as it is just a wet spot it was probably clear also. As it was still wet it would have happened within the last hour or so and that would have been approximately 9 hours after feeding. We think we know which cat did the last spot but as it was done before we returned we cannot be positive. That is the only thing that I have changed in the last few months as the one cat that lost his fang has been skinny so I was hoping to put some weight on him. In order to give him some wet food I have to give everyone a little to keep them from pushing Dusty off his food. I just had Princess vomit clear which is the cat we thought was the one that made the mess we found when we got home. As they only had the moist in the morning today it is well over 9 hours since I fed it. I can limit her tonight to see if that helps.

I have checked Dusty's gums and they do not look red or inflamed. I see maybe one other tooth that will need looking at but besides his fangs he has only the one other tooth. Most of his teeth are real short or gone. The hard food I am feeding is small enough that he can swallow the food whole if needed. http://www.sportmix.com/cat/wholesomesChickenMealRice.php

I will be able to look for a different moist food but feeding 5 cats I have to consider enough to feed all 5. Special Kitty was $1.00 for 22 oz.

I have tried adding water but the cats are being hard to please. Any ideas for what to use to make a broth with?

Do you mean broth to boost fluid intake? The best I've found for that is poaching water from making poached chicken. I often do it in the oven too - I just use a decent sized baking dish and cover the chicken pieces with water, then cover and bake til done. My cats (and dogs) always go nuts for the resulting soup.

Another idea to build Dusty up is bone broth -not expensive, but time consuming to make.
I can't help with food brands I'm afraid - still not familiar with US brands. Hopefully someone else will have some ideas there.

I've just been looking at the special kitty online. It looks like it contains wheat - is that right? That could well be what's causing the problem. The other possible culprit is guar gum. I'd focus on going wheat free first though - its both more allergenic and easier to cut out.

The Mixed Grill Dinner and Super Supper Dinner varieties seem to be wheat free though. Might be worth trying those next. The Special Kitty patés are grain free too, but they are more expensive.

The hard cat food Wholesome states it can be served with water, milk or broth. As my cats are all over 12 years old I wont use milk as we do not get milk as I am lactose intolerant. I will check with my husband and show him the video.

I am trying to also put some weight on Dusty and as I have seen he has basically no teeth and just lost a fang tooth. It looks as thought the Special Kitty might have be causing some issues so I will try the broth as just putting water on the food did not interest them also the first time I can see them turning up their noses too.

When I went to feed the cats last night all the food was gone that I had put some water on earlier in the day. Last night I just added water to the food and no Special Kitty my husband stated that he did not find one vomit anywhere this morning I will check with the store as the container states it guaranteed or money back so I will see about getting my money back on the food I have. The cats are not keen on the water but are eating so I will see about getting something to make a broth with.

If you don't want to take the time to make that bone broth, making simple chicken broth by just poaching a couple breasts, or better yet, thighs (more flavorful), would work well and give all of them some added fat.  Just remember NOT to add ANY seasonings to the chicken while cooking.

So glad there was no throw up last night
Yep, sounds like it WAS that Special Kitty.   I wondered if that might be the culprit when I read you had added in a little to their diets, after I looked up their kibble and saw that it didn't seem to have anything bad in it that would typically cause vomiting.  Wow @Columbine, what a sleuth you are in figuring out just what food she is feeding.  I'm impressed!

As to the clear throw up you saw from Princess 9 hours after eating a small amount of canned food, that could be from a build up of stomach acid on an empty stomach.  That's exactly what happens to my old girl when she doesn't eat frequently, AND my girl is already on Pepcid A/D
.   I actually feed her several small meals throughout the day, AND treats from under my pillow at night to keep this from happening.  As to "the boys",  I lay on the floor and do some interactive playtime with them while she gets those extra meals (really to keep them away from her), and then in the middle of the night, they have been trained that if they wait until she has eaten her treats, they will each get one.

I feed the cats 1/2 of the daily amount of the kibble and I always check to make sure there is food in their bowls at all times.
