Has anyone had a cat with constant UTIs? We are at our wits end with our cat and currently doing a "hail Mary" treatment. She gets UTI almost every other month. We've had her on special food from the vet for this for over a year. We switched her litter to wood pellets that were supposidly better. We have multiple litter boxes. We have lots of cat climbs and Windows beds. (We have 2 cats and 3 dogs so we want the cats to have space away from the dogs).

She tells us she has an infection by peeing on the bed or the couch. We take her in, they test, it's a UTI we do anti biotics she's good for about 2 months. But then bam your sitting in cat pee (sometimes poop). And she only does it when she has an infection otherwise she goes in the box ok. But because it's a constant struggle this has made it where we have to lock her up in the bathroom when we aren't home or awake to watch her. (Im a sahm so it's not like full 8 hr work days, but I will be part time in fall so it will be longer) I feel it's very unfair but I don't know what else to do.

The vet ran tests and she only has a UTI and inflamed bladder so the vet is doing laser treatment which she said should help keep the UTIs away for 6-8 mo. Because of what it does to keep the bladder from getting enflamed. But because they don't see any other issues it must be stress or environment induced.

I don't know what else to do for her except plastic wrap all my furniture like they did in the 70s. (I'm already almost there with a waterproof couch throw and all the beds have the vinyl covers under the sheets) :(

The vet said we could try her on xanax to see if that will help if she's stressed.

We rescued her from the pound a few years ago with kittens. And for a while we thought this was behavioral, then we started taking her to get checked and it was consistently a UTI. It has gotten worse over the last year 1/2 which is why we started the special food, and starting doing what we could in the house. But if this treatment doesn't help Im not sure what to do. Life in a bathroom isn't fair but neither Is living in cat pee. People have suggested outdoor cat but we live by coyotes not to mention all the stray dogs. Guess I'm hoping for someone out there who's had this problem to give some hope.

I've not had experience with this issue, but I do sympathise. If there's a chance it's stress related, it might be worth trying Spirit Essences or Composure before going straight for the prescription meds.

The other thing worth trying is boosting her fluid intake - more water may keep things flushed out and help prevent reinfection. This article has some great ideas http://www.thecatsite.com/a/tips-to-increase-your-cat-s-water-intake

Lastly, I know a weak immune system can increase susceptibility to UTIs. It might be worth talking to your vet about ways to boost her immune system.

Good luck. I hope you're able to break this cycle soon - it can't be fun for any of you :vibes:

Yes, some cats are prone to be stressed out, and stress can definitely cause UTIs.  It's a difficult situation you're in.

Feliway sometimes helps with these issues, And I would definitely give some of the calming sprays or items mentioned above a try, although anything like that has to be constantly reapplied as far as I know.   It's good that you have cat trees and window beds, but obviously even that isn't enough.  Does she get plenty of play time?  That helps stressed out cats.  How about music.  There are actually CD's for cats that help calm them down.  Harp music is supposed to be the best, oddly enough

Maybe this article will help you with a few anti-stress tips:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/six-surefire-strategies-to-reduce-stress-in-cats

And, as Columbine already stated, try to get her to drink as much water as possible.  Even though none of mine are prone to UTI's, I always add more water to their canned food, just to make sure they are plenty hydrated.

Sorry you're having this problem. Ritz has/had been prone to stress induced UTIs, especially in the first two or three years after she was rescued from the streets.
Are the UTIs bacterial in nature? What are results of the cultures?
I have been feeding Ritz prey model raw for about three years, although I can't say that was necessarily the magic answer. In her case I think she became slightly more comfortable, less stress.
That said, because she has been under some stress lately (fostering some cats), I am starting to give her l-theanine, which is a natural calming agent (and is found in the calming treats).
What specifically are you feeding her? (Brand name, wet? dry?) Has it been the same special food from the vets all the time? You might want to talk to your vet about switching foods, or adding l-methonine (spelling). Caution: I considered giving that supplement to Ritz, but you need to know what you're doing, i.e., be careful of the dosage. And I was afraid I'd give her too much which (as I understand it) would cause the other type of crystals.
Good luck.
