hi all, new here and worried...this past Monday I applied Advantage II fleas treatment for the first time, since then he's vomited a watery sort of vomit four times, he is a cat who rarely vomits which is why I'm worried, he's not having any other side effects...should I go running to the vet immediately, or wait and monitor a while? any and all advice would be most appreciated! thanks!

I know when we used to give our cats advantage they wouldn't really feel great for a day or two, but they never threw up.

If you're worried, I would definitely call the vet and ask at least. It is very important to make sure that the cat is getting food and water into his system. He could get dehydrated more easily if he is throwing up too often. It also might be something that wasn't triggered by Advantage at all.

it's entirely possible that it could be something else, he might just be in overload, the infestation was bad and he was a mess and I wanted to get the fleas, and the eggs and the rest, off of him as quickly as possible, so I put a collar on him too, which I've taken off last night, cause the smell is horrible, some nasty powdery scent, and when I combed out the fleas I used a spray, not on him, he doesn't like to be sprayed and the smell of this was also hideous, so I just used it w/ a paper towel to whipe the fleas, eggs, and the rest off the comb...it's been a miserable week for him...

Wow. Yes, it probably is because of an overload of poisons. Flea collars in general are not usually very safe and can be quite toxic for cats. I'm glad you removed it. Generally it is not a good idea to double up on treatments since this can make cats very sick. Hopefully, he starts feeling better soon.

yes, threw it out after putting it on him, he wore it for about 20 minutes before I tossed it, so many people advised using a collar and the advantage together to eradicate the fleas, even the clerk at petsmart...well, stay away from the chemicals, he was just so miserable from the fleas, you know how they get...I'm thinking I'll give him the weekend to 'detoxify', so to speak, and call the vet Monday, unless he gets worse, it's just mild vomiting, maybe it's good he is spitting up some, might be his way of ridding his body of it, and yes, he's eating and drinking normally and acting normally...I don't want to panic, you know? and then there's the vet bill...

I totally understand when it comes to vet bills. I hope it'll resolve itself if it is only mild vomiting. Just keep an eye on him and if anything starts getting worse he'll definitely need to take a trip to the vet.

I will keep a close eye on him...you know, I can really smack myself, but the thing is, I'm a total novice when it comes to fleas and dealing w/ them, I've had cats for more than 40 years and nary a flea because my cats have always been house cats so no fleas, no ticks, no lice, but I moved recently and yoey stayed w/ my sister for a few weeks who let him sun himself on her back porch w/out telling me...well, so...fleas were the result and I didn't recognize the eggs until they hatched...

anyway, thanks for responding and listening, I'll do what you said and see how he does, and if it gets worse or he stops eating or drinking, off to the vet we'll go, outrageous bill or no outrageous bill...

I know what you mean about not having experience with fleas. We haven't had any in our area for a long time (until we got a new kitten), which is surprising since we live in a forest with all kinds of animals (chipmunks, rabbits, racoons) that fleas would love to hang out on. Our dog goes outside so fleas could come in on her.

It is possible that the fleas didn't come from the cat going outside briefly though since sometimes fleas hitch a ride on humans and then end up on even indoor pets.

To get rid of them well in your house vacuum everything and wash blankets and other things like that, flea spray is usually not necessary.

oh yes, I've been vacuuming and doing laundry like crazy and now I've been using on the house something that's not toxic or harmful, it's called 'Vet's Best' and it's made w/ just euchalyptis and peppermint oils and w/ all the rest and combing him out I think we're now 99% flea-free...

and yoey seems better tonight, he ate well, drank well, and hasnt vomited since very early this morning...now if he would just let me comb his paws, he hates have his feet trifled w/...

I live on the jersey shore, fleas can be a problem here, it might be because of living near the water, though that's just a wild guess...

anyway, thanks so much for posting, it's much appreciated...I think I'm going to like this site...

There are a lot of people on this site who are very knowledgeable about a wealth of topics, so I'm sure you'll find plenty of info here.

Also  be careful with the natural oils. Make sure your cat doesn't eat them since essential oils can be toxic to cats also.

I've been exploring, it's a great site...

yes, I've been careful, I've only been using it around the house, rugs and furniture, and he doesnt go near any of it til it dries, you dont need to use much, just a fine mist, so it dries fast...

and he's fine now, completely back to normal, and flea-free...
