My cat tryes ocationly to mount my leg while I lie down. He has done this a few times over the years. He just out of nowhere jumps on the bed and starts humping. I'm assuming this is an act of possessiveness since he is obviously nutered. Has anybody seen this kind of behavior in a cat and have some insights.

I have seen this type of behavior in some neutered cats but it is not that common! Was your cat neutered late in life? Is there anything that could be stressing him? I have seen a couple of cats over the years in cages at the shelter that would have stuffed animal for humping. I always thought it was stress related though. I also had a Siamese who would grab the back of the neck of one of my other cats and dominate him but never really humped him. He just moved his back legs a little bit and hold him still. He was a very anxious cat though and highly stressed too. I would try to redirect your cats attention when he does this by getting up right away and walking away. Let him know this behavior is not one you approve by ignoring him. Check out this article on Modifying cat's behavior - also included are links to other behavior articles that may be pertinent. http://www.thecatsite.com/a/the-dos-and-donts-of-cat-behavior-modification

Thanks so much for your response. My cat is about 7 yrs old and was nutered at 8 weeks. He is not a stressed cat at all, he is very friendly and goes limp when picked up. He can be however, a little aggressive at rare times. He sleeps with me almost every night and even puts his paws on my face. I wonder if he is just very possessive of me. The first few times I experienced this humping behavior he was around 2 yrs old and I was so fascinated that I even took a video. I have spoken to a few vetrinarians but they all said they never heard of such a thing. Now I'm glad to finally know that this behavior does exist and I wonder if anyone knows if there are any professional articles about this subject.

I have one cat 13 years old that will yowl and start dragging a towel around and hump the towel. I read that it might be from lack of attention but my cat get a lot of attention when he allows it. We do have several cats in the household and 2 dogs. My chi dog has also humped one of the cats.
