My 14 yr old male cat has had some occasional sneezing and sometimes daily coughing for about a month now. I started daily Chlorotabs about 3 weeks ago which I think has helped but it has not completely cleared up.

He seems to feel fine and is eating well but I hate to hear that coughing. I really can't afford a vet visit now. I read another post on here that referred to a vet's site that said you can give them Guaifenisin. The dosage was 1/2 ml per lb of cat. I only gave him 1 ml as I was worried he might have a side effect. He spitted and foamed at the mouth. I was wondering if Mucinex could be given instead. I wouldn't know how much but it seems like it would be easier.

I would appreciate any advice

I know you don't want to hear this, but if I had a cat who was coughing almost every day and I was concerned enough to try and treat it, I would never dare to give him/her meds based on online research. Foods, feeding, behavioral, stuff like that sure. I have also done research and asked questions here and then discussed and made suggestions to my vet based on what I learned, who has usually been receptive to my ideas. Also if my cat has been on a veterinarian prescribed med I have asked questions here and on another pet forum about their cat's experiences in similar situations. I think you experienced a bit of what can happen when you make your own med decision - the mouth foaming and spitting. Please find a way to consult a veterinarian before giving your cat human or any other kind of med. If you have a long standing vet they might do a phone consult, try this and if it doesn't help come in. I am in regular email and phone contact with my primary vet over meds and dosing for my cat who has a multitude of complex issues and is on a lot of meds. I am in bi weekly phone contact with an internal med specialist over meds and dosing for my other cat with chronic upper respiratory disease. Both of these vets have asked me if I needed to do a payment plan when cats were in diagnostic stages, yours might too, or you could find a vet who does. Your cat is completely dependent upon you, and it sounds like he has been with you for a very long time. I know very well the ridiculous cost of veterinary care, but I feel like you owe this to your feline friend - just one visit to find out what you could safely try.

I was not sure that it was an infection but when he sneezed this morning the mucus was a white, yellowish color so  I have an appointment tomorrow.

I called it 'foaming' but it was the bad taste of the medicine that made him do that.

This has happened a few times before in the past 1 1/2 yrs so I need to talk to the vet to see what I can do to try and prevent this.

I do appreciate your concern and your response to my post. Thanks!
