Okay. So maybe a few hours ago i noticed a reddish fluid on our tile and a few more reddish drops in another section of the house. I assume that was her water breaking. Then my cat started meowing fervently and ill just cut to the chase, a slimy, red, squarish fleshy thing came out of her vagina and she basically immediately ate it. I saw no kitten and i feel like it might have been a placenta but again, there was no kitten. Im concerned alot about this and though my sister says its probably fine, thats not enough for me and I started researching but found no answers. Do you guys have any advice or information to help?

And as of three hours since then shes been acting normal and needing attention, I just dont know.

Thank you,

Noah

Thanks for the speedy reply. I dont really know, from what I read, that suposed to be green-gray color but what came out of her was defintely more red color. and I just read that  a kitten without a placenta in the cat will suffocate from lack of oxygen well within the first hour. I just hope it wasnt a placenta honestly.

and sorry for the bad grammar and spelling. Trying to get stuff across quickly. My sister seems to be completely unconcerned about it. But I have another question, will there always be a mucus plug before the actual birthing of the kittens?

Like in the order things are supposed to come out are:

1) The water of the cat

2) Mucus plug?

3) Kitten

4) Then placenta?

It may have been the sac of a kitten that never developed, or the related placenta. A sort of miscarriage if you will. And it's normal for her to eat it.

And apparently it's not quite time for her to deliver the remaining kittens. These things happen.

Do you know how long she's been pregnant?

Okay. Thanks for the reassurance, I guess if it was a placenta or a miscarriage, there nothing I can do about the kitten at this point. And I do not know how long shes been pregnant, but June 17 my sister took her to the vet and he said she would deliver around 7-10 days, and she is defintely on the latter part of a cat pregnancy as its now the 30th.

Your cat is probably beginning early labor, since she already expelled this material. It wouldn't surprise me if she goes into full labor very soon.

It's always better for a cat to go longer, as premature kittens do not survive.

Keep us posted on her progress. :)

Thanks guys, I'll keep you posted. We saw a video on youtube saying that if milk comes out of the teets when you squeeze them slightly, then labour is imminent. But my sister tried and there was nothing. But just to be sure guys, how long should it safely take a cat to have her kittens after her water broke? like how long should I wait for the actual labour before being concerned about the wait-time?

Put your cat in a nice secure place alone -- and then watch her as if she would like to look for a kitten

Try to listen for kitten miewing

A cat go on labor for at least eight hours -- so you need to keep her in a safe dark place like under your pc table and put a nice soft for her to lie down on

When she has delivered -- give her small bits of soft chicken and then have her drink condensed milk with water

Make sure the kittens are safe next to her and have them suck on the mothers nipple -- if the kitten do not suck -- you might have to help them

When make sure you leave them during the day in a safe place like  a huge laudry basket to they can try to open their eyes and will not go semi blind

They need light for eyes then at night give her to her mom

Then put mom and kittens in the light -- like train the mom to stay in the laundry basket with the kitten

Make sure you feed the kitten with soft cook chicken and also wet food 2 oz per lb per day

Wow that's a lot to do And I don't think Athena (the cat) will take kindly to being somewhere I'm not. She's been going everywhere I go, but I hope and trust Athena to find the place I set aside for labor to give birth. But I will do my best for the cat and her kittens-to-be!

But guys, how long is the max time between her water breaking and actual labor that it's normal and safe?

There is no formal timetable. We are not sure her water actually broke yet. Not even sure if she has lost her mucus plug yet.

The vet's prediction was just that - a prediction of the earliest she might give birth. Did he do an X-ray? Without one, and just by palpating, it is truly an inexact science.

She will go into labor and have her kittens. Labor can be quick or take hours. Kittens can be delivered quickly, or every hour or two. There can be interruptions in labor. But if she is not in distress, there is nothing to do but wait.

I wish I could be more specific, but every situation is different.

I will say that once her water breaks, things do generally move along quickly. She will have strong contractions, followed by pushing, followed by delivery of a kitten. It will then repeat until she has delivered all of her babies.

I hope this helps! :)

The vet just palpated, and I am definitely sure Athena is near or at the maximum prenancy time of 70 days. And I am also quite positive her water has broken, and four hours ago too. But I agree, she's not distressed, but I still hope to have her going into labor within the next 12 hours (a time frame I read online). I will keep you guys posted!

Yes. At first I just saw a reddish puddle of water on the tile, and then maybe 20 minutes later there was defintely a larger expulsion of water, which was closely followed by the mystery flesh thing which Athena immediately ate.

Still no labor with Athena, I hope this is normal to not go into labor 5 and a half hours after her water has broken.

There is a possibility it was just the water around whatever came out of her today. Like I said, not an exact science. But if she's in no distress, there is usually no cause for concern. Try to relax.
