I e-mailed Nutro to ask where Nutro Max canned cat food is manufactured. To their credit, they wrote back right away. Here is what they said: 

"I would be happy to address your inquiry. All of the NUTRO[emoji]174[/emoji] products are manufactured in North America."

Okay well that narrows it down at least....But North America is a big continent!

I called, and they said their canned food is manufactured in South Dakota IN THEIR OWN PLANT, which always makes me feel better. I am suspicious of the quality control when outsourcing is involved.

That is good . Yeah I always call if I have a question about a specific brand ..

The big ones like Mars usually do have their own manufacturing, but it is surprising what is outsourced sometimes.  That big canned recall several years ago tripped up almost everything including many large producer brands.

Like yesterday I found out Iams canned foods are outsourced to Simmons.

I think A LOT  of  pet food companies are like that . There are probably very few that actually manufacture their own food in their own plant ..

It's a mix so far in my experience. Some medium and small producers do can their own and some really large companies probably do some of both.

It's not always a slam dunk for company owned IMO either. For example, Natures Logic last I knew did not can their own food, but they are very transparent in their practices and I would trust them more than some others that actually own the plant.

What I find is the more I delve into this the less sure of things I get, but at least I make my compromises armed with more info....
