Hello! We rescued a road kitten fathers day. Poor baby was a bag of bones, couldn't stand for 3 days. She had ear mites, fleas, upper respiratory infection. Fecal test showed tape worms and coccidia. Vet treated her last tuesday for ear mites, fleas that I couldn't get, intestinal worms, and we started vaccines. She was about 6 weeks then, behaved like a new eater. Also started her on Sulfatrim for the URI and Coccidia at that time. Stools were loose for just a few days as she was passing those lovely worms. Last 4 days they have been normal. I started reading about Toltrazuril. Ordered it and gave her a 1st dose last night. Stopped the Sulfatrim. It was next to torture to dose her twice daily with Sulfatrim so I was happy to read about single dosing.

Question is, when is it safe to start letting our other 2 adult cats in the same room with her after the 1st Toltrazuril dose? 24 hours? Or should I wait 24 hours until after the 2nd dose at 10 days? She has her own litter box in the room she has been quarantined in and her stools are removed immediately, but still nervous about the Coccidia getting to our other cats. I also plan to do a preventative Toltrazuril dose to our other 2 adult cats. Was thinking I'd dose them when I re-dosed the new kitten at 10 days. Or should I dose my adult cats preventatively now? I've been trying to find the information and am just not seeing it out there.

I appreciate anyone's two cents who has gone thru this. Thank you, Stephanie

I can't speak to the doses of medicine but I wouldn't intorduce her until I was sure the coccidia was cleared.  You will have enough to do with the introductions without having your two cats get sick.  Wait for the vet's all clear.  Perhaps you can ask him about the doeses of medicine for your two current cats, too?

Thank you so much for helping her - she was lucky to have found you!

Re coccidia, Ponazuril is a good alternative, IF it will be necessary to try something else.
