Hi all! I'm trying to find a good canned food that my cat will eat. Right now he's eating mostly Fancy Feast Classics, which aren't bad and I'll keep them in the rotation, but I'd like a better food for him. He's not super picky but there are some brands I've tried that he just doesn't like (Tiki Cat, Natural Balance to name a couple). He seems to love the Wellness Complete Health Beef & Chicken and also the one Merrick flavor I've tried so far (beef I think). I've heard a lot about Wellness causing crystals and UTIs though...is this true? Or is this only for the CORE and not the regular "Complete Health"? Although he likes the food I don't want to put him at risk for urinary tract issues. Would Merrick be the better choice of the 2?

Thanks!

IMO Wellness is better than Merrick, but there were reports of UTIs a while back with Wellness. I believe everything was anecdotal, but it'd be pretty hard to prove, too, unless all cats that ate Wellness suddenly got UTIs.

There's lots of good cats foods, though. I've never tried Dave's, but it seems similar to Wellness by the ingredients. I would add a couple brands for variety and to safeguard against shortages or recipe changes of a particular brand. Remember that texture counts, too, so the dislike of Tiki Cat could have to do with shredded style food.

I used to feed Wellness (not the Core so much) but my cats went off it. Then I read that a lot of people were having the same problem and apparently Wellness had recently changed its recipe. However, I did buy a couple of cans recently on sale and thought I'd give them a try again, and my cats did like it again. For me, it's a matter of variety and different brands in their rotation, so I'm happy to add it back, plus the bigger cans are better budget-wise. I don't feed a single food all the time, and I believe this helps in regards to avoiding a health issue arising from one brand of food.
