My boyfriend and I are new kitten owners. We have had our baby for a couple months now (he's 3 months old). He uses the litter box well except when it comes to covering his waste. He will dig a spot to poop/pee in, but instead of covering it up he scratches the side of his box. We have tried using his paws to cover it for him, but that hasn't stuck. We tried putting the cover on his box, but all that did was have him scratch the sides/top of the cover instead. We have sifted his litter and changed litters. We are at a loss. Does anyone else have this problem?? Help us, please!

My Milo did this throughout his 14 years. Sometimes he would even scratch the bathroom wall after scratching the side of the box. It's my understanding that some cats just don't cover their waste. I'll be interested to see if anyone has some tips for you - I never could get Milo to catch on.

I'm glad to hear someone else has had this issue. We searched online and couldn't find anything to help. We thought we just had a very "unique" kitten! I hope someome has a tip. I'll be sure to share if anything works.

I don't think there's anything you can do to teach a cat to cover up their pee and poop.

Some cats just don't bury. I'm not sure there's a way to "teach" them; you certainly want to refrain from grabbing their paws and scratching the litter -- they don't understand what you're trying to do and it may be uncomfortable/scary for them. My cat doesn't always bury his either -- half the time he does, and the other half he just scratches the side of the box much like yours.

What I do when I pass by the box is to peek in it, and if he didn't bury it, I just do a quick scoop and bury it for him, just enough to cover the clump.

I don't understand why this would be a problem.  Others are right, some cats just don't do it & I see no reason to try to teach or force this on them.

If you've had him two months that means you got him at 4 weeks which is really early to leave his mum.. There's lots of stuff he hasn't learned, but it's unlikely you can teach him.   Some cats just don't cover their poo... my boy doesn't.

There are so many products now to help with things like this.. self-cleaning boxes, etc.

Here's a great article on all things litterboxy..
