Do cats eat slugs?

We had a cool, rainy spell after a hideously hot streak, and that means only one thing: slugs. They're not bad (yet), but we've had them so bad that they swarmed the house. They got into the dogs' water bowls, on doorknobs, and--well, they were everywhere. (It's all the worse, because I'm allergic to their slime.) So here's my question: do cats eat slugs? We've got poison for the little pests (we've had it since the last infestation), but I need to know if I put it down if I'm going to poison the furkids.

Yuck!!  I don't envy you that problem.  We sometimes have the big banana slugs here and my cats have brought them in but they don't eat them, they just leave them for us to find (thanks a lot, cats).

Cats seems to eat anything that crawls. If you're talking about using snail/slug pellets, I'd toss the entire box in the trash as quickly as you can. Those pellets are extremely poisonous to cats/dogs.

Yes, cats and dogs eat slugs. Toss the poison. Make sure you keep an eye on the animals for lung worm, as slugs are a vector.

Purchase FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth. This is particularly effective for slugs, but not harmful to your animals. If you have a flat property, put out a good coat of it. It will remain despite rain. If you have run-off, you will need to reapply depending on how much it rains.

Here are other ideas for controlling slugs (and snails) naturally: http://www.gardenmyths.com/how-to-get-rid-slugs-with-beer/

Eclipse licked a couple of slugs last summer.  I don't think either party enjoyed the experience. LOL

Yeah, toss the poison.  My neighbors killed a skunk that at the snail pellets they put out in the yard.

Because we had dogs for the first infestation we laid down lines of salt around the house to keep the slugs from getting to it. The slimy little--not a word good for public viewing--actually produced so much slime that they were able to go OVER the lines of salt without getting affected. Where would I find   FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth? The only types of slug repellent I've been able to find have been like the one we threw. (And to answer the other question: no, we did not put the slug poison down while we had dogs. We just bought it before reading that it could be dangerous for pets.)

I think you can find food grade de at a tractor or farm supply store.

So here's a fun trick we used in Maryland.  Put out a bowl of cheap beer.  The slugs will go into the bowl and drown.

Seriously? That's awesome!
But will the cats drink it?

Yes they will.  We didn't have cats then and we were always in the yard when it was out since our kids were small.
