Hi!

Could anyone please tell me how much caring for a cat with a fairly bad flea allergy costs?

My beloved family cat passed away last year at the great old age of 19/20 & we've missed our beloved companion. After a second visit to a rescue shelter, we completely fell in love with one cat in particular, but he has a bad flea allergy - you can see where his hair is thinning from over grooming and skin is irritated (the shelter is very good, by the way, and provide the cats with the best veterinary care!) Can anyone give us an indication of cost of treatment for this kind of condition...? (my mother will be retiring in 5 years, and I will be moving at the end of next year, so we must consider costly treatment, sadly...)

Thank you for your help! <3

I don't think it's particularly costly. I had a cat with a bad flea allergy, and the main cost was keeping her topical flea meds up to date. She had to have them every month, except in winter,  because even one flea bite would cause a big problem. You can get good quality flea meds like Frontline or Advantage over the counter now, so it may be even less expensive than it was for me.

When I first found out she had this problem, I also used supplements for  skin  and coat health to help her heal from the damage the fleas and her scratching had done. However, she only needed those extras for a short time; once she was healed I only had to keep the fleas off her to prevent a recurrence.
