Loose Smelly Stools...

I have 2 male, neutered cats who are 5 years old and one has recently developed loose, smelly stools.  About 3 months ago, I switched both cats over to a completely canned food diet from a dry/wet combination diet.  They both made the switch very well and seemed to be doing fine until a couple of weeks ago when I started noticing an occasional STINKY poop happening.  I have only ever caught one cat having the stinky poop.  We have just moved home about 4 weeks ago and I thought possibly it was stress from the move.  However, we moved back to the home they lived in for the first 2 1/2 years of their lives and we have visited frequently in the 2 1/2 years we've been away.  I am feeding them Friskies canned food, but never the fish varieties.  They only get the chicken, turkey and occasionally beef varieties.  I'm careful to always feed them mainly poultry, with the beef only once in a while.

Has anyone else who feeds only canned or homemade food had this problem?  I'm wondering if he's allergic to something or if he may have gotten worms or a parasite from one of the indoor/outdoor cats.  (Both cats are indoor only).  Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Sam

Yes.  Loose, stinky poop is a hallmark of food intolerance.  Some kitties just can't tolerate certain foods or certain varieties of food.

BUT, it is also a sign of worms,so if you think that's a possibility, I would be checking for that.

And, certainly, the stress of the move could do it.  Especially if they've been on the new food for 3 months now, and they've only been having this problem for one month.

Looks like you may need to start eliminating things to try to figure out what it might be.  First, though, I would check for parasites.  If none, then I would start eliminating some of the foods.  Which cans of Friskies are you feeding...not flavors, but pates, or what.  Only the pates are low carbs.  All the others contains wheat and soy, which many cats have issues with.  IF you are only feeding the pates, then I would eliminate the chicken and see what happens.  Oddly, some cats can't tolerate chicken.  If that doesn't help, you could try adding in a good probiotic.

Thank you for your reply.

I have been feeding them the filets, shreds, and bits.  Neither of them will touch the pate, unfortunately.  I actually stopped giving them the turkey and the beef for several days and haven't seen any evidence of a problem.  I'm going to slowly reintroduce the other flavors, one by one, and see how that affects things.  They have an appointment next week to get checked for parasites of any kind as well.  As soon as I can, I'm also going to start making their food.  Our house has had issues with bladder & kidney issues in the past and Dr. Lisa (catinfo.org) is a fantastic resource for helping to correct and prevent these kinds of issues.  The boys in question have been extremely healthy and I would like to continue that!  =)

Thank you again for your help!
