Hey all,

My cat has four kittens that are close to 3 months old, and she appears to be in late stages of pregnancy again. Today, while I was at work, she and her kittens escaped from my back yard. I got a call from a neighbor whose house she had wandered over to with one of the kittens. When I picked her up, I found the other kitten in the neighbor's yard. Now, there are still two kittens left missing.

My question is this: will a pregnant cat lead her kittens away from the nest and abandon them if she gets pregnant again, in order to protect the kittens she's about to have??

If anyone knows more about this, or had had a similar situation, please let me know.

Thanks!

No! A cat who can get out of the back yard will get out of the back yard, and her kittens will follow their mama. I hope you go out and call your kittens, and find them, and put them all safely in your house. Your neighbor was kind to call. After all, your cat and kittens are not their responsibility!

Have you a plan to have your cat spayed after this next litter? Do you plan to spay/neuter the kittens and keep them? Or do you plan to find good homes for them?

You must do something with these current kittens and with mama after her next litter in order to be responsible. Mama will have to nurse her new kittens, and the previous ones need good homes.

But no, she was not trying to "lose" her kittens. She was just wandering, and the kittens do not know any better. And they will be very hungry and scared if they are lost! :(

If the mother does not like the location of her nest, she will move each kitten, one at a time to a new nest where she feels safe. Maybe let her out to find her other babies, but don't let her get too far away from you where you can't see her. She may have hid them, or they may have wandered a little bit if they are walking. She probably won't  run away as she will be very defensive about her kittens and making sure she gets back to them. Make sure to bring her and the kittens inside. Also, take her to the vet as she may not have birthed all of the kittens and thats why she appears pregnant again. Its always a good idea to take her to the vet atleast 24 hours after giving birth to the last kitten. Also, GET HER SPAYED!!

The kittens we are discussing are 3 months old. The mama wandered and the kittens followed. The mom cat is pregnant again. Hopefully the kittens will be found. And yes, all should stay in the house! :)

Have the kittens been spayed or neutered yet.  I've heard females can get pregnant at 4 or 5 months.
