Hello! I recently adopted a 5 year old cat last week, she is half tabby & half mainecoon. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations on canned food that has no grains and low carbs? She has a very thick coat, so i'm looking for something that will contribute to making it shiny & smooth.

Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to TCS :wavey:

I've asked the mods to move this to the nutrition forum, as that's where you'll get the most help.

I can't help you a lot with brands as I'm still not too familiar with US cat foods. It would help to have some idea of budget though.

I know the Sheba patés and Fancy Feast patés are good low budget options. Going up in price, I think Tiki Cat and Nature's Instinct are well thought of. Hopefully some others will chime in with more specific advice though.

In the meantime, check out the reviews section http://www.thecatsite.com/products/category/canned-cat-food.

Here's a list outside of TCS: http://www.catster.com/forums/Food_and_Nutrition/thread/774137

Carbs aren't necessarily a problem unless your cat is diabetic and requires a very low carb diet. I suggest sticking with foods under 20% carbs so there is more variety to choose from. If you limit yourself to, say, under 5% carbs, the food choices are very limited. Use this chart to find out the carb content of foods: http://catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf The chart is a few years old so the info may no longer be accurate but still useful.

As someone else has mentioned I would suggest the Fancy Feast Classics for one . My cats love it . Actually it is the only wet food they will eat . Their favorite flavors are  Chicken , Turkey & Giblets , Liver & Chicken , Ocean Whitefish & Tuna .

I don't know what brands you have available in Auckland but might suggest watching out for carby ingredients like tapioca, potato, and peas that are often used as thickeners and/or fillers in grain-free cat foods.

Our cats eat a combination of canned and raw foods that are almost all 10 percent carbs or lower (in dry matter) and that works great for them. The 10 percent limit allows for lots of good commercial foods, even without feeding ingredients like fish, carrageenan, or menadione any more than occasionally. It took us a few months to wean them off dry food and find a good combination of foods that they'll consistently eat but everybody seems happy now!

Good luck!
