My cat had kittens a week ago and I'm in the middle of moving houses what do I do? How do I move my kittens? I wasn't expecting her to have them for a few more weeks!

Hi! Welcome to the forum! :)

Don't panic! We'll figure this out.

Where are they now? In a nesting area in your home?

And where/how are you moving?

Is it a local move or long distance?

Once I know a few specifics we can work on a solution! :)

Do you still need help?

If you are making a local move, you put the mama and her kittens in a pet carrier and put them in a bathroom at the new house on moving day and close the door and instruct no one to enter. Put food, water, and litter in the bathroom for her. You can open the carrier door once she is in the bathroom.

As soon as a bedroom is set up with familiar furnishings, you move mom and babies back into a nest in the bedroom or closet. Mom may want to explore her new surroundings, but I would keep her closed in the bedroom for several days so she doesn't panic and try to get out of the house or move her babies. As long as you are there to reassure her, and furnishings smell familiar, she should be fine. She just needs to be safe from the hustle and bustle on moving day.

If you are making a long distance move, it gets a little more complicated.

I'll wait to hear from you. :)

Yes they are in there nesting area. It's a long distance move four hours. Im driving my minivan with the kittens and some of my things and my partner is driving a uhaul. I'm sorry I thought I responded yesterday but I guess it just didn't go through. But the mama(Lucy) does get upset when we even attempt to move the box. Sarthur2 Sarthur2

She has a right to get upset over her newborns. She won't appreciate the move, but she will be okay for a few hours.

Hopefully, mom and kittens will be together in a pet carrier. They'll need to nurse. Try my bathroom idea for when you get there.

How soon is the move?

I wish you safe travels and please give an update or ask more questions as you go along. :)

Yes they will be together I didn't plan on separating them. I will defiantly try your bathroom idea and will keep up dating! Thank you so much for your help!

We made the move! We put her in a room all to her self with just a few things in there and she keeps trying to move the kittens though

That is common enough, esp if she feels unsecure.

Rearrange her nest some, so its even more welcoming and feeling like a secure hideout?

Having some of the old smells put in, hers, or at least, yours?  Some sweaty t-shirts or socks...

Calming music?  Classical harp music is best, but almost any may work.

On youtube there are purring sounds from mom with kitten, several hours long sessions.  May help this too.

Congrats to the move.

ps.  Re moves, having them in a dog cage is sometimes good, esp if they usually hate moving by car.   Have them on a leash, or at least, have a collar on, iwth your name and telephone number...

Congrats on the move. In what room is she? It is her instinct to move her kittens to a place of her choosing that she deems safe. Depending on where it is you could let her if you are all settled in. She does need the comfort of familiar scents - bedding, furniture, and you, and familiar routines. If she's trying to put her kittens in an unsafe spot, just keep her closed in your bedroom for a few days to a week.
