Hi, my 9yr old cat Ollie has been at the vet for 4 days now on IV fluids after he was diagnosed with acute renal failure. We have no idea what caused it as he's an indoor cat with no access to grapes, raisins, lillies, medications etc. I'm actually allergic to all of the above so it's never in the house! The week before I took him to the vet he was eating little, drinking a lot and just not acting like himself. After being there and being on fluids his personality has mostly returned, he's eating and drinking and passing urine (no poo though) and is mostly stable. His creatinine levels however are super high and haven't dropped at all. The vets are fantastic but I understand they have to be a bit neutral in the situation so I'm not sure what's a good sign or a bad sign. I'm so afraid of losing him, I don't want to lose hope! I guess I just want to know if anyone has any experience with this and what are good signs he might be recovering despite his blood work not improving. I'm committed to keeping him there and on fluids for as long as it takes but I'm worried being away from home may also play a part. I've been visiting and sitting with him at least an hour every day, today for 2.5hrs and I hope thats also helping. I'd really like some positive advice right now, everything I've been reading so far about ARF is terrifying!!
Thank you, and lots of hugs to all the cats from me xx

I am so sorry you are going through this.  I really can't give you any advice.  You're kitty is getting the best possible treatment, the IV fluids.  Unfortunately it's a wait and see game now.  I know that doesn't help and this is very hard, but there really is nothing else to be done.

Thanks Denice,
He got worse during the week, anemic and not eating so we made the decision to bring him home where he is happy and make him comfortable. The vet gave him 24-48hrs yesterday if he didn't start eating and I can't describe to you the difference being home has made for him! He's been eating small amounts consistently and his whole demeanor is much happier. I'm not expecting a miracle but any time with him is better than none. We've decided that if he gets worse we aren't going to put him through the stress of more tests and pokes and prods and hospitalization, we'll just have him happy and content at home as long as he has his dignity and is surrounded by love. Hardest decision ever, but I know in my heart it's the right one.

I have a cat with CHRONIC renal failure, but honestly don't know much about ACUTE renal failure
.  It's a whole other ballgame.

I'm glad to hear he's started eating a little bit since he's been home.

Even though it's not quite the same thing, this website MAY still be of some benefit, as it has tips on getting your cat to eat, what you can do if Anemia strikes, etc.  It's definitely MY "go to":  http://www.felinecrf.org/index.htm

Here's hoping your little guy keep eating

Thanks Mrsgreenjeans!
He's been doing really well, after being given 24hrs on Wednesday we now don't have to take him back for 2 weeks! His personality is 90% back to normal and he's been eating consistently at least once an hr [emoji]128522[/emoji] the vet also showed me how to do sub-q fluids at home so will be doing them today too. She said we have to treat him like a CRF cat from now on as he will probably have damage the rest of his life, but honestly every hour I have with him after the initial 24hrs is more than a blessing [emoji]10084[/emoji]

Well that's great news (that he has a follow-up in 2 weeks, NOT that he's a CRF cat though, although that's better than an ARF cat.

So then that website will prove  VERY beneficial to you after all.  We just gave our girl her sub-q fluids today.  She looked like a little calico water balloon right after
.  Hey, if you can't find some humor in things, then you're lost right off the bat.

Anyway, SO glad things are looking up

This is great news.  Of course it would be great if a kitty came out of a crisis like this with no damage but unfortunately that usually isn't the case.  CRD can often be managed with good  quality of life for a number of years.
