i have tried scratching the scratch post with my nails in front of him, but he just stared and then walked away. It was a stray before the shelter people got him and put in foster home with 2 of his brothers (no mom). he doesn't know how to jump either. there's a cat condo, he only goes in and come out. i can see sometimes that he want to jump onto other levels but he can't. how do i teach him to jump? or will he learn on his own?

He doesn't eat treats either. I got him Greenies Dental treats (savory salman flavour). and he doesn't seem interested in catnip either.

He's 8 weeks old.

Do you just have one scratching post? You may need to experiment with different ones. My two prefer horizontal scratchers, and aren't interested in the vertical scratchers we have for them. You may also need to experiment with different textures - cardboard, sisal, carpet. So maybe get a couple more to see what type he prefers.

What is he scratching instead? Your furniture? Try placing a scratcher next to wherever he's scratching. Also cover everything he's scratching in sticky paws - it's double sided sticky tape, and he won't like the feeling of his paws getting stuck. You can also get anti-chew bitter spray that you can spray on areas to discourage him.

This worked for our new cat who was also scratching everything. So now everything in our home is covered in sticky tape! lol! But it's worked - she's now using two different scratchers. I highly recommend the horizontal ones by Pet Fusion - they are big enough for cats to lie on too.

I'm sure he'll learn to jump in time.

The way I taught Asha about scratching posts was with a toy. I'd play with her with a fishing pole type toy. When she was really engaged, I pulled the toy around and up the scratching post. As she tried to get it she naturally scratched the post a little, and discovered how satisfying it felt to scratch there.

If he has areas he particularly likes scratching, put a post in that area that you can redirect him to. Try to work out if he prefers vertical or horizontal scratching - if he likes scratching the carpet or rugs he may prefer flat scratching pads to upright posts. Experiment with different surfaces and styles until you find what he likes best.

With catnip - young kittens often aren't interested in it. Try him again when he's a bit older...maybe in a couple of months.

Don't worry about the jumping - it'll come as she gets bigger and stronger. Interactive play is a great way to encourage her to try, and it will also build up her muscles to make it easier to jump.

About the treats, he might not like the salmon flavor or might not like that type. Feline Greenies has different types of treats and flavors. You could also try freeze-dried treats.

my cats seem to prefer the cardboard scratchers and they all came with a little bag of catnip to sprinkle on them. he may warm up to that since he's still a baby. they really like the turbo scratcher that has the ball toy built in and i have one attatched to my couch that they all use--even my 11 week old. also have an incline one and some flat ones along with the rope kind on their cat tree. you need several! you can get them cheap at chewy.com or amazon..
