Frohe Weihnachten, Hedi! And Merry Christmas, Sherral, and everybody else who checks out this thread. That was adorable. Christmas is always a bit melancholy for me, because I'm so far away from my family. Today it was very harmonious, for a change (I'm saying "was" because Christmas Day will end in about an hour here). For once, there were no arguments between my in-laws and my brother-in-law's wife, my husband was a lot more sociable than usual, and we had a lot of fun discussing travel plans - my 16-year-old German nephew is going to accompany me to the U.S. in August, and is really excited. I'm going to have to book the flights within the next 2 - 3 weeks in order to get the holiday rate and the dates we want, so we've reached the concrete stage. I hope he's not going to be disappointed. "Home" to me is Philadelphia and its surroundings, but my sister moved to Nebraska in 1990, and my parents followed in 1993. Germany is more familiar to me than Nebraska, but of course I have to visit my family when I go to the U.S.. You're all probably going to be hearing all sorts of things about this trip in the upcoming months!

Danke! I generally go once a year, for 3 - 4 weeks. My husband won't be coming with us, because we don't like leaving Jamie that long with a cat sitter, and my husband finds it boring. He doesn't like to travel. Sometimes we go away for a week to places that aren't too far: the Bavarian Forest, Austria, Hungary, Britain, or Belgium, and hire a cat sitter (usually a friend's teenaged [now 18] daughter, who loves the solitude - we give her $100, complete Internet access, and the user's instructions for the VCR, DVD player and stereo, and bring back a souvenir), and have my mother-in-law stop by every day to check on JC and cuddle him. Another problem is that I have to stick to regular school vacations, and my husband's employer gives first preference to people with kids during the school vacations, so it is very difficult for him to take time off when I have off. How often do you get back to Germany? Who takes care of all your cats when you're away?

I have not bin in germany for over 11 years
and I really don't miss it . I love it here in the us .I may go next year with my son for a while though , need to take care of some things but hope to do it from the us . I guess I see .My husband will stay here though , we both hate to fly now . I guess it is age lol . But we do have a lady she works at the animal control and know she is good with animals . She took care of all my animals this year while we were gone for 10 days in Massachusetts by my hubby's family . So I would not worry about that , well I would any way . A mom always worry lol .
