I applied a dose of cheristin to my feral cat this evening (she will let me pet her but that's about it).   Right after I applied the dose it started raining and she got wet.  Will the medicine still be on her or have I lost that dose?  She really needs something for the fleas that are eating her up!

How soon after it was applied did it rain?

Unless she got literally drenched before it had a chance to spread and absorb, I think it's fine and will still be effective.

It was about 30-45 minutes.  And it was a downpour!  She stayed up close to the door so she didn't get soaked but she was wet.

I also have another question, not sure if I should start another post but....  This feral stays  very close to my house.  I want to create something she can be protected in, cool from the summer heat (and from direct sun at about 95 - 100) and also protected from the mosquito's that are eating her up.  I have several other feral cats, and a semi-feral that comes inside.   My semi-feral has given up her porch territory to this cat but I would like to create something that several cats can use.  All get along pretty well.  They just stay away from each other.  After all that, my question is whether putting a feral home on my back porch is enough protection.  This feral is very small and seems to be dominated by everyone.  I have an area in my yard where they all hide (between bushes and a storage shed) but it isn't protected and she is out in the elements.  She won't stay in this area anyway - she sits at the door and meow's at me!

She wants to come inside desperately but I don't want another indoor cat.  In fact, my semi-feral drives me nuts.  I'm not really fond of cats but I can't stand to see these cats just left and abandoned.

None of these cats are spayed but I have appointments next week to get the females taken care of and to get all their shots.  It really is expensive when you don't have money in the first place and then, you really don't want cats!  I was going to try to re-home the little cat but from what I'm reading in these forums, feral s don't re-home very well.

I guess my question is how do I make my backyard comfortable for this feral?

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I have re-read your question a few times and there is no short answer really.

She was clearly an owned then abandoned cat since she wants to come inside so badly. Poor thing :(

If you google making inexpensive outdoor cat shelters you can find ideas on making one or several, depending on whether or not you want separate ones for different cats or not.

As far as getting them all fixed, you can get low cost/rescue priced s/n for them if you call around the rescues or shelters asking for help. The shelters will also offer food for feeding ferals/outdoor unowned cats.

They really do need to be fixed as soon as possible, or you will have a growing problem!

Hi Catwoman707, thanks for your reply!

My main question is about putting a house on my back porch.  Will she be too exposed?  She stays there all day anyway - just didn't want critters to be able to get to her.  She's very little.

I'll figure out something about a house. I have one there already but none of the cats will use it.  I guess they don't like the scent of the previous owner (cat).  : )  I've been out on several sites but not happy with what I've been seeing.  I have a friend that said he would make it if I designed it.

She's definitely a feral, she is the baby of the lady across the street's cat - second litter I might add.  I tried to put her in the carrier to take her to the vet and it was very traumatic for both of us!   I am going to get a can of tuna and put in the back.  She has GOT  to get to the vet !

I definitely have to get all these cats spayed...  There is a clinic I have been going to.  Just takes time/money to get them all done.

Thanks again for your response!

I think it will only help if you put a house on the back porch. Just turn it so that the entry area is not facing the wind so she will have protection.

And yes, the others won't go in to a house or anything else that smells like another cat or a dog.

I teach people this is so true when using traps to trap cats, always give it a good saturating with a household cleaner then hose it off well and air dry, after each time a cat has been trapped.

Otherwise they can smell the fear/adrenaline left behind and would rather starve then get in it!
