It varies depending on where you live, but here in Michigan, I found a low cost vet clinic that did microchips for $15 each, so I got both cats done. Very cheap for peace of mind!

My indoor kitty doesn't have any inclination to go outside on his own, but he's old and slow. (around 14 years old)

Oh..I see. You know, I almost adopted a 10-year-old kitty that was in Petsmart. My kids like to hold the kitties there and they have a little play area. I didn't only because I was afraid with Kiwi that he might wander outside. Wonder if Kiwi will turn into an "insider" when he's old. Do you think Tiger might become an indoor cat when he's older?

Right now, I don't foresee him voluntarily staying indoors full time  anytime soon, but anything's possible, I'm sure.

When the weather gets cold, I'm sure that he'll want to stay in almost all the time, because -10 degree weather isn't very appealing to a cat. I'm hoping that will get him into the habit of staying indoors.

Adopting a senior cat is awesome! My senior cat is really mellow and relaxed. He lets me carry him around in a baby carrier and is just a real cuddly boy. Tiger would probably jump out of the baby carrier in 3 seconds!

I love your picture! That is so cute! What's his name? He looks so happy cuddled up in the carrier. Is he a dark black kitty or has some gray to his fur? He is beautiful. Kiwi has too much energy for a carrier, but I think one of my dogs would do that- I have a Shih Tzu that is a total marshmallow. How does your kitty get up to the roof? Does he go up a tree? Kiwi seems to be sort of strategic about it- he jumps up on an old tree stump near the house and from there jumps (quite far!) to the roof.

I always get hopeful in the winter that Kiwi will stay an indoor cat. We had temps here in upstate NY last winter that were -15 and even lower at night. Kiwi stayed in and cuddled up to the heater all winter. He does not like the snow. He will go out and use the "facilities" if the snow is an inch or two- anything more than that and he turns around and comes right back in. Prince Kiwi

I looked on line for microchips and found that you can buy the microchip on line and it comes with instructions on how to place it. It requires you to register the microchip after you place it. I would get Kiwi chipped as soon as possible and also as suggested try and bring him in at nights If you get him in the habit of coming "home" You will know where he is on a regular basis.

His name is Spottie and he is dark black with one large white spot. He just loves cuddling with me.

I've seen Tiger climb a telephone pole to get to the roof. As far as the barn roof, I'm not quite as sure, because I haven't watched all of his mechanics.

Thank you Kstonya. Where did you see the microchip online? I suppose I would have to inject it under his skin. I am going to research that. Thanks for the information.

Crazy4Strays: Tiger sounds so much like Kiwi- very agile and brave : )

Kiwi is so beautiful! What a handsome kitty.

Isn't it so flattering to be "chosen" by a cat? Maybe they can just smell the good vibes coming off your house. LOL!

I agree. Kiwi is so beautiful. When he was first trying to run into the house, I thought he must be someone's cat. He had been neutered, so it seems he had a home and got lost. Some of my neighbors said they had seen him around the neighborhood for a long time, but I had never seen him before. It was such a horribly bitter cold night that my daughter's boyfriend opened my front door and he ran in. I brought Kiwi to the warmest heater we had (in one of my bathrooms) and he lied down there on a towel and purrrrrrrrred.  He was SO HAPPY to be out of the cold. We fed him, but he couldn't keep down any food and the vet told me that it was due to starving and we had to feed him very slowly- eventually he kept the food down and gained some weight. He was all bones- to the point where I was afraid I would break him by picking him up.

We tried for a long time to find his owners but no success. After healing up some infections, especially to his face (claw marks) and feeding him (he couldn't hold food down and vomited everything for weeks) his fur became so full and colorful. I was looking on the internet for what kind of breed he could be and I think he must be related to the (orange) Norwegian Forest Cat. He has the same kind of fur and markings. This is Kiwi sitting on my front windowsill. He likes to sit there and wait for us to let him in : ) He also likes to sit on my windowsill in the back of the house watching us until we notice him and let him in : )

How interesting! Tiger was already neutered when we got him as well. We put ads and had him scanned for a microchip and couldn't find an owner. Our area is a popular place to dump cats and it's not unheard of for someone to abandon a neutered cat....

I did a search on the internet for microchips they come preloaded and all you do is place it just like you would do a shot.

You can see you have done such a good job with him, he looks so healthy now!

What do you mean by "preloaded"? Do I have to register it somewhere? Thanks.

You do need to register a microchip with all of your contact information and keep that information updated. A vet or shelter may find the cat and be able to detect the microchip with a scan but if the microchip is unregistered or has old contact information, there is no way for the vet or shelter to return the cat home to its owner. Ask the person who puts the microchip into the cat (usually the vet) for the microchip information and registration paperwork. There may be a one time fee to register a microchip. Some microchip companies offer paid yearly subscriptions with many features but the basic feature of the microchip is usually free after registering. Check with the microchip company for the details.

Pre-loaded means that they microchip is already in the syringe ready to be placed under the skin of the animal. If you give your own cats their shots it is the same way to place the microchip. After you place the microchip you go on line and register the number and your information there is a fee for registering and that is available when you search for microchips and how to register. The vet is not the only person that can place microchips. Some Pet food stores and feed stores. The instructions on how to place the microchip is included when the chip is mailed to you.

Do you have any pet vaccine clinics around? Our clinic at Tractor Supply did my cats' microchips for $15 each, including registration into the database.
