So i was given a kitten a few weeks ago, almost a month now and I have placed her in a full wet food diet. I'm currently giving her Blue Buffalo Freedom kitten canned food and i'm not to sure how much kittens are suppose to eat? she is about close to 2 months and i have only given her 1 can ( 3oz) per day but i'm not sure if it's too little.

Here is the link to the canned food that i'm currently feeding her.

I would really appreciate any guidelines and comments about it, thanks in advance! and Kiki also gives her regards!

Hi DeviousOtter

According to their website, they recommend feeding  as much as your kitten will eat in 3 or 4 feedings per day, up to 20 weeks of age. I think many vets recommend the same thing.

Your kitty is so cute!
Her eyes haven't changed color yet? I sometimes forget how tiny kittens are as there are none in my home now.

Hi HayCat!

okay I was a little worried as to how much is too little or how much is to much but i'll start to add more food and see how much she eats from that, i  just wished blue buffalo could sell larger cans for kittens. thanks for the reply!

The pic was taken a few weeks ago but now her eyes are a very light shade of green now! i really find it amazing how their eye colors change at this age.

^she's a cutie!

You want to make sure you are feeding kittens as much as they want.  They are still growing.  They'll be days where she may want to eat 9 oz a day!

Please consider feeding her a variety of brands as well.  I'm glad you are feeding wet food but its best not to stick to just one brand.   Check out brands like Nutro Natural Choice, Natures Variety, etc.   I feed about 5 or 6 different brands of wet food to my 2.  Cats are so picky so its best when they are young to adjust them to different kinds of food.    Good luck :)))

There's also been some issues with Blue Buffalo as well.  Some forum talk here

Thanks Lokhismom! I noticed that some days she would be fine with just one and other days she would be meowing for more!

And yeah i was wondering if it would be okay to change her food brand since sometimes i find it difficult to just buy from a certain brand when the prices are a bit too high. I'm a full time college student so i just get my money from a weekly allowance from my parents when i babysit my baby brothers.  I'll go ahead and check out those brands thanks again!

and thanks for that article, i had no idea about this..to think that even under the listed ingredients they lies to the buyers.

Kiki is adorable!

Ditto what Lokhismom said!  You can not feed her too much wet food; they grow so fast.  She needs more than 3 ounces for sure.

My kitty was eating more like 11 ounces of wet over 3 or 4 feedings, plus a little dry, every day at that age, and up to almost 1 year.  She is very active.

You might try Wellness CORE kitten: it comes in 5.5 ounce cans.  Wellness Complete Health is also available in kitten (the little pink can).  I know there have been some questions about Blue, but for the most part the really high quality brands don't produce kitten food.  So you might try Blue's other lines as well, such as Blue Wilderness kitten canned.  My kitty loved Nutro Max kitten chicken canned, but it is not grain free so we only gave it to her occasionally.

"Kitten food" is just adult food with extra fat (this saves the food company money from meat). The premise is that kittens can burn away the extra fat through growing, whereas adult cats would just get fat. Don't be fooled! While it IS hard for a growing kitten to get fat, excess fat in the diet is never healthy. Kitten food is often sold at the same price as adult food anyway, so just go for the adult cans next time. Wellness is a great brand recommendation, I would also add Fancy Feast (Classic varieties only, not fancy "gravy" or "breakfast" ones - all gimmicks) as a decent brokecollegestudent-friendly option!

wow! kittens sure tend to eat a lot! my kitten is quite active too but not to the point where she drives me crazy yet.

I was actually thinking about trying out the wellness core kitten canned food since i saw it was 5oz and it would be around the same price range i would spend using two cans of blue buffalo freedom 3 oz cans. I'm hoping to expose her to many food brand variety so she doesn't get too picky about just eating from one brand in case something happens.   Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the recommendation! i did see the prices for both the kitten and adult cat canned food for blue buffalo freedom to be about the same price, i just didn't know if it was okay to give them adult food since the kitten food has that extra fat but now you brought a good point too.

I'll be checking out the wellness core canned food since it's 5oz, thanks again for the info!

Our cats love Wellness CORE's kitten food: they're now (allegedly!) adults but I still get it for them every now and then as a treat. BTW, you can compare lots of cat food nutritional information on the catinfo.org site, on a PDF food chart that shows fat, protein, and carbs. Wellness's CORE kitten food is actually lower in calories and fat than some of their other CORE foods. The CORE foods are generally very decent and our cats liked several of them when they were still into pate, though I stayed away from the salmon/whitefish/herring because it's higher carb and the chicken/turkey/chicken liver because one of our cats can't eat potato.

Our cats also love Nutro Natural Choice: minced chicken, sliced turkey, and chunky chicken. They're not the cheapest but they keep the cats happy for a long time!

In any case, have fun with your kitten and definitely try lots of foods on her!

Thanks so much for the inside on wellness core! I recently came across it a while ago, i use to feed my dogs wellness till it wasn't around my budget anymore for two working class dogs so i feed them something else that is gain free since one can't stand gains at all!

I like how their cans are larger in size but i'll go ahead and check out how much calories are in one can, my kitten so far can eat from 3oz-6oz so far and it was thanks to all of your answers that got me into testing the waters with trying out different brands and amounts of food given.  So far my kitten hasn't been picky about food but we'll see how wellness does for her and whether she likes it or not, Thanks for the chart!
