They were mewling but she was too far away to hear them. My daughters nighttime life support equipment is horrendously loud. I corralled her closer to them and I couldn't hear them yet but she must have because she took off towards them. She hopped up on my bed to watch them from a distance but they started fighting and she got down and settled it. At 4 weeks, I know the kittens would be fine for quite awhile but I don't think she realizes their age so her knowledge would be she's leaving newborns. I am very glad to see her moving around. And she got her voice back! Intubation made her so hoarse but she tried meowing a couple minutes ago and she's squeaking now. By morning, she should be back to boisterous!

Lol! She's got quite the hisser too! Although, she's in tune with these babies. I sit back and watch them and it's fascinating. Just her body language and the look on her face is all it takes for them to pay attention. If they decide not to listen she pins them down with her front legs and waits for them to chill out.

I sat up reading the whole thread until 5.30am. What a marvellous thread. What good mothers, polka, you and your mum.
I hope polka and the babies continue to thrive.
i also hope your daughter will feel better after she's been to the hospital.
Best wishes.

So cute!  You should enter the 2nd one in the photo contest.  It cat's w/open mouths.  She looks like she is laughing.
That was my first thought too!

I wonder if Polka does sense how old the kittens are, not so much in age but in what they are getting up to and how much she has to coral them and intervene in their little scraps.  Perhaps this influenced her decision to go exploring your home.  It is good to hear she is feeling secure and wanting investigate now.

How is your daughter with cats, does she ever have contact so she can touch and feel them?  Other young people I know who have been on ventilation and things have really loved this.

My daughter looooooves contact with our animals. Our rats are especially fond of her and will sleep with her for hours. I have been watching polka. She definitely doesn't stay gone long. She just takes a break to relax and clean herself up and then she returns. She is a terrific mama.

I love having these guys in my home! We already have people fighting to be their furever homes. We are keeping them until they are 12 weeks old. That will give polka 8 weeks of nursing and mothering if she chooses to do so. It also gives us time to spay 4 and neuter 2 cats.

So, er, ah, not to bring up a touchy subject, but has Polka given up catnip now that she's a full-time mom? :)

Hahahaha!! Laughing so hard right now. I hadn't even noticed with all the stress, she doesn't even look for it. I got a video of the kittens with polka. Hopefully I'm posting this correctly. Polka likes to hold my hand.

Love it! I just want to love up on Polka so much. She is too sweet. Those babies nursing her melt my heart. You've got some frisky ones there!

Glad she's given up her hard-core addiction. It was much too time-consuming! :)

I'm glad too! I'd hate to see how crazy the kittens would get if exposed.

Polka isn't real interested in water still. She's never been a big drinker. She's eating a TON of wet food though. Is that sufficient for her water?

Yes, it is sufficient. She will drink water when she's parched. Will she drink a dish of KMR?

She doesn't even want kmr. I gave her a bowl and she let her kittens have it. She's just interested in her favorite wet food. And ALOT of it.
