Yes, it seems like you have done all already. I don't think I followed this story from the beginning but I'll go read over all of it. I do hope surgery goes well for him. Sending prayers and good thoughts to both of you.

I agree completely with Nansiludie. Are you having a PU surgery or what? I wish you contacted the FLUTD group prior just for input.I understand totally you feel you've hit a dead end.I just don't want  your babe to have reoccurring episodes(yes scar tissue too) from surgery afterwards that no one will tell you about. In all honesty everybody wants your money.Hearing from members who have gone that route to me is absolutely essential. But I am sending very positive vibes to you & your babe for a very positive outcome.Hugs C.

Yes he had the surgery this morning.  Our vet called to let me know that no stones were found, however a few Oxalate crystals were found but nothing to cause the inflammation that was found.  As the vet described it; the bladder was "extremely angry looking".  They had a lot of trouble getting a cath in him, which did not surprise me considering our night last night with him.  The plan as of now is for Pumpkin to stay a few days being carefully monitored, a new medication was being started called Aces?? (not sure of the spelling), however it was something that they heard very good things about and felt it was worth a try, there are two treatments of this drug.  Evidently his urine is showing slight kidney damage with everything that has gone on over the past month.  I will be calling later today to check on him and they want me to visit with him everyday.  I will keep everyone posted....thank you for your prayers....please keep them coming for our little guy.

Aww Pumpkin, I have, & will keep him in my prayers for sure, for a speedy recovery w/ no complications. Give him some luv'ns for me!

I hope all goes well. Some comfort Zone, or Feliway plug in diffusers will be a great idea for when he gets home. (plug in a couple of days before he comes home, so it gets around / in the house).

Hopefully, it will help the other cats w/ him coming home smelling of the vets too. He definitely doesn't need stress from them when he gets home.

Glad to hear surgery went reasonably well. If you could bring his blanket and maybe a toy from home he might like that. It will do him good to see you.

Actually my little guy has his blanket from home with him now, hopefully they put it in with him and if not I will tomorrow.  He really doesn't have a favorite toy....his most favorite thing is to sit in the window watching the birds, which I pray he will be doing by weekend.  So lonely here without him as I was checking on him every 5 minutes it seemed.  The other kitties have sure taken advantage of mom's free time, I think everyone has had to sit in my lap once or twice,  we played a little longer today and they even got a mid-afternoon snack (but we will not tell Pumpkin about that) LOL.  Talked to the vet office awhile ago and they told me that he is still sort of out of it, but resting comfortably.  Thank you everyone, will give an update tomorrow.

I am glad to hear he has his blankie and is resting well. Usually they are a little sleepy after surgery especially this kind of surgery, probably by morning or afternoon he'll be feeling better, slightly hung-over but better.

What sort of surgery did he have? A cystotomy to look for/remove stones or a PU surgery to change his anatomy and make it easier for him to urinate?

I'm not sure what that medication "aces" is, perhaps it's acepromazine? That's a sedative and isn't usually used in cats very much. Maybe it's something else.

There is a medication called Prazosin that helps relax the bladder muscle and makes it easier and less painful for them to urinate. At my hospital it's prescribed to almost all of our FLUTD kitties.

Did they do a urine culture along with the urinalysis? A urinalysis will tell if there's bacteria in the urine but a culture will tell what bacteria it is and which medication is best to treat it.

Someone else mentioned stress-induced cystitis. Even if you don't perceive any stress in your household, this may be something to consider. Some FLUTD cats do very well once prescribed an antidepressant like Fluoxetine or an anti-anxiety drug like alprazolam.

In any case, good luck and keep us updated!!! :)

I'm glad your little guy is doing well.Oxalate crystals are rare.I only know one person who knows the complexity of them. Most at least 90% are struvite. As for soothing the bladder the flutd group uses corn silk & marshmallow root.Apparently corn silk and they have the recipe is very healing for the urinary system.Cystitis without a cause or stress induced cystitis is also called sterile cystitis. The member on the Flutd who just lost her babe had many bouts of sterile cystitis and is truly a wealth. They (the flutd kitties) are mostly on D-mannose as well which is excellent.Hugs to your babe.C Buprinex is also used highly with pain as well in kitts & is tolerated well. But Mary would be the one you'd want to chat with.

Just got back from visiting my little guy.  Last night he evidently pulled out his cath...so he is now been re-cathed and wearing the collar of shame which he is not happy about.  The medication that our vet is using goes directly into his bladder using the cath still not sure exactly what it is as the vet was busy.  Pumpkin's incision from the Cystotomy looks very good today, no redness although it is early.  He was still groggy from the sedation while re-inserting the cath, but was very happy to see me, wanting petted and loved...which he got lots of.  Could tell he was uncomfortable with cath but I guess this is to be expected.  Just hope my boy responds to treatment so that I can get him home and he can live a happy, carefree and painless life with all his fur siblings.  Hate feeling so helpless when he hurts.

Oh, I am surprised they did not cone him right when it was done and he was waking, its actually common for them to pull out catheters, mine did with his and the Dr had a bit of trouble placing it again. I'm glad he was happy to see you and feeling a little better. One thing I did want to let you know is that if you're using clumping clay or any clay litter, change him over to pelleted or paper litter when he is home as the clay and clay dust will stick to and irritate the surgery site.

Now that  you know it's OXALATE Crystals vs Struvide, I'm guessing he'll be on  a very strict diet with meds (like Tumil K), probably for the rest of his life to prevent them from coming back

At least now you know what the problem was.  Poor boy.  But now he's on his way to recovery

Hi Ms.G J.Oxalate are differet as we both know. The jury is still out as per a diet that will break up those crystals unlike the struvite that most kitties have suffered with.I know one person in 30 yrs who is a wealth about them.here is a good link about the whole darn thing.A little old but I can't get Maureen to join and post. She is very busy on yahoo.

Hope the little one gets feeling better soon.Corn silk really soothes the bladder & urinary tract..Hugs .

When Angel went through cystitis, & had sturvite (struvide?( sp??) crystals & he was put on amatriptyline  (2.5 mg./day) to help relax the bladder. It also made for a smooth transition to indoor only! (4 yrs ago).

We think his was from a little stress, (even though there's not much,as it's just the two of us here), because he was on wet food, & also grain free for a while before it happened.
