Cat friendly or not-unfriendly plants

I'm moving in a couple of days (woo!) and we're thinking of putting a couple of plants in the small rental apartment -- one of those kinds that filters the air and nasty smells. Are there any such plants that are somewhat safe for cats? I live in the Midwest United States, so we have a range of temperature and weather.

Bamboo is on the safe list and a Bamboo fern is on the best air filtering list.  I don't know anything about it but I am thinking it would probably get large and be relatively fast growing.
