Hi all!

I have a new 13 week old male kitten. He was feral and was raised in foster from 4 weeks of age with his brothers, and was neutered around 6 weeks (very young!). We got him 2 weeks ago, by himself.

The first few days we had him, he was eating wet food well (all food) and seemed happy. However, I noticed he was frequently going in the litter box and crying, jumping/running away, and not urinating much. His stools were soft (not diarrhea). We went to the vet, who said it might be FLUTD, and gave him Buprenex. This seemed to alleviate those symptoms and we stopped the pain meds Friday evening. Starting Saturday morning, he stopped eating wet food - he has lost interest in it, though he will still eat dry food. By Sunday, he felt hot and was extremely lethargic, and I noticed evidence of tapeworms in his bottom.

On Monday, we went back to the vet. At this point, he was concerned about such a young cat having so many issues (as he put it). He found no fever, and Oliver had gained about .5 lbs in a week. His anal glands needed to be expressed, and he gave him shots of B12, Vitamin C, anti-parasitic (Drontal?), etc. and sent me home with more vitamins and Cipro eye drops for conjunctivitis he had developed.

We had a very hard time giving him the eye drops throughout the week, and here we are - one week later. His tapeworms appear to be gone, but he is still refusing most wet foods (we've been giving him expensive grain free like Wellness, and then tried Friskies as a last ditch attempt - he has a few bites and loses interest).

For the last 48 hours, he has been sneezing with increased frequency, and acting somewhat stressed. I noticed him scooting his butt on the rug last night and crying near the litter box, so we took him back to the vet for the third time today. At this point, the vet expressed his anal glands which produced some mucous, and gave us more Buprenex. We are taking him to his foster home on Thursday because we are going away, and his foster mom is going to start him on antibiotics and terramycin for his eye.

As our vet is puzzled by what could be going on (he is FIV/FELV negative), I thought I would turn to the internet to see if I could get a second opinion. Thank you so much in advance!

P.S. He also started suckling his own nipple about a week ago after being taken to the vet the second time, and he purrs and kneads himself as he does it. He basically only does it early in the morning in our bed or when someone is cuddling him...I feel this is unrelated and is likely due to early separation from his mom and brothers, but I wanted to check in about it as well.

I want to make sure I am reading this correctly. In the 2 weeks time you have had this little one, he has developed:

FLUTD
Tapeworms
Conjuntivitis (my guess is herpes virus)
Has begun suckling on himself

Is this correct?

With the exception of tapeworms (had he been previously dewormed?) all the others are likely due to stress (including the suckling if it is a new behavior).

What is the environment like at home? Any kids? Other pets? Other activities?

Is the foster home he is going to the home he was in before coming to you? The moving back and forth between homes is likely to cause him more stress and potentially make him sicker.

You can try using Feliway diffusers in your home to help reduce stress. Several members here have also had results with Rescue Remedy for pets or Composure Liquid Max..both can be added to wet food.

As for the food...
Have you tried warming it up a bit? This usually releases more aroma and makes the food more enticing. You could also try a veterinary probiotic called FortiFlora. It is sprinkled on the food and most cats find it irresistible. Plus, the probiotic will be beneficial for him overall.

Was this kitten attached to any of his siblings or the momma cat?
