His tibia/fibula to be exact, although it's a closed fracture. The vet made him a cast and gave him a cone to prevent the little guy from gnawing his foot, but he seemed so stressed out with the cone and cast, I almost wanted to take them both off to let him breath. He flops around like a fish on dry land when he tries to move and make the most heartbreaking whimpers and meows when doing so. Is there anyway to ease his pain(without painkillers) before he recovers? I heard that kittens heal broken bones really fast, so I don't know how long is he going to be back to the rowdy kitten he always was.

My 20 year old Pete (he passed at the ripe age of 23, but this happened a few years before he died) broke his leg somehow. Our Vet, who has been practicing for 40+ years, gave us the options. 1) Surgery to try to pin the leg...$800-1000  2) Put a plate in the leg (best option)...$1600  3) Give Pete the last rites and say goodbye... wasn't an option to me.  The Vet said that Pete's leg was broken but was pretty well self set...not perfect but pretty good. Pete didn't seem to be in too much discomfort, so the Vet offered the option of giving Pete some pain meds and said to give it a try to recover at home. We coddled Pete and waited on him hand and paw to feed and water him. We cleaned him up the first day when he couldn't get to the litter box, but he managed to use it afterwards. Eventually Pete recovered fully and lived a few more good years.

The moral of the story is that your kitty will heal surprisingly fast and be his old self before he gets used to the collar. My Vet used to make their own collars for cats that were very light and not nearly as cumbersome as the huge plastic thing they tried to hang around my 5 Lb kitten after her surgery. If the collar is too big or heavy, you can probably find one somewhere that is more practical than the ones that are being pushed by many Vet companies/corporations nowadays. The cast will be forgotten in a day or two, and the collar gets used to pretty quick as well as long as it is manageable for the kitten. Poor little guy! :(

I've been down the road of having an 8 wk old with a broken leg. We were able to set and splint/cast the leg. He was also crated to prevent too much movement and prevent the leg from healing incorrectly.

He had to have the cast changed every 1-2 days as he would get it wet from stepping in his water. Using crate bowls helped; but, he still managed to climb and get inside the bowl...silly kitten!

We re-x-rayed at 4 or 6 weeks and the break was calloused over (healing). There was an additional 2 weeks of crate time to allow complete healing. Then we did at-home physical therapy to rebuild the kitten's muscle tone.

He healed up really well and was adopted about a yr ago. He has an ever so slight limp when he walks; but, it is completely unnoticeable unless you know which leg and are watching him walk.
